  • Black CTS-V, heavy paint correction and Opti-Guard coating

The owner recently traded up his '05 CTS-V (which I detailed two years ago) for this used '06 model, and as you can see the paint needed a "little" love in order to bring it back to life.

I had hopped to keep this job two a two step correction, however there were far to many deep RIDS which were taking too long to remove so I opted to bust out the rotary and wool pads.

    Correction Process:

-M105 via rotary and Solo wool pad
-M105 via DA and Meguiar's MF cutting pads (finished down very well)
-106fa via DA and tangerine LC Hydro pads

    Coating Process:
-Foam bath with OPC and CGCW to remove all polishing oils
    -IPA wipe-down
-Opti-Coat(Guard) applied with supplied yellow foam applicator to all paint, wheels, trim, and lights. (8cc used)

    Before pics

    Brinkmann showing swirls

    Deep RIDS

Very deep Scratch (too deep to safely remove 100%)

    Swirls under the halogens

    50/50 after M105 on rotary

    Gas cap fail!

Polishing aggressively around gas doors can be tricky! By using some fine line 3M tape I'm able to protect the edges during the heavy compounding while still getting very close to them....much better than using 3/4" masking tape.

This is after the first two steps....look how nicely M105 finished down on the MF pads!

    Wet sanding deep scratch (1500/3000)

Not 100% gone, but hardly noticeable. (removed around 8-10 microns)

    Finished pics!

Sorry, MN weather ***** lately and no sun shots could be had.

Sun trying to find it's way out...

    Thanks for looking,

Very nice Chad. That paint had definitely seen some better days and that day just came up. I'm thinking of giving my truck a coating. Still in the air though.

Great work Rasky . Sorry to hijack your thread. Please can you offer some advise?

I have a Jag that I will be working on in a couple of days it has a rather deep scratch on the boot lid. I have not yet measured the paint thickness. Depending on what I find I will be able to cut 50% out with some 2500/3000 unigirt no problem.

When you get really deep scratches do you simply reduce or try and fill with CC let it cure then wet sand/polish?

                          Many Thanks in advance,

                          Rappy

                            Great save, Chad.

That paint really needed an immediate attention.

Did you use burgundy or yellow So1o pad with your rotary? Great results with M105/ MF cutting disc as well.

Indeed they are! Pretty much every car I do now is getting coated.

It makes washing easier and it keeps the car looking cleaner longer too!

                              Thanks Rappy!

Unless they are a wide scratch, I usually just try and reduce their appearance and I really don't like to pushing it...even if I'm using a PTG. Better to live with the scratch then risking a strike through.

Unless you get a good paint match, I find touch ups often look worse.
