  • Plan of Attack for Defects? (Pic Heavy)

Well, I just bought a GG 6 Random Orbital and some Meguiar's 6.5" pads:
    Maroon M7006
    Yellow M8006
    Beige W9006

And I was wondering what do you guys think my plan of attack should be for fixing the defects with my new polisher on my 1995 Silver Mercedes E320 W124.

    I have:
Ultimate Coumpound, Swirl-X, clay bar kit, NXT 2.0 Wax (paste), and Gold Class Carnuba + (paste).

Here Are the defects. In some light they don't really show, but in others obviously they do.

I guess you'll just have to click on the picture links because I couldn't figure out how to embed them. Thanks

I'm a little confused by this photo:

The marring seems to be inside the logo. How does the paint finish get that marred up without badly marring the logo? Or am I not understanding what is intended by the photo?

I understand that the cutting pad is not recommended for D/A use. It could remove some defects, but add different ones that might need rotary help to remove.

Do you know if this is a single stage or clear coat paint?
'95 puts you in MB's transition years from SS to BC+CC.
By my guess, I might see clear coat failure in this photo, could be just heavy marring or oxidation on a single stage...

Start with the wash, clay, and then the UC on the 8007 - see what the test area shows.

I'm pretty shure that it's a clear coat, compared to my SS VW it is definitely way different. How did you get that picture to work btw?

            Another:

Also, dead-on and in certain light, these things disappear, to the point where the paint looks a little faded, but nothing that doesn't look like it couldn't come out.

It can hold a shine ok...

And the hood is completely fine.

This was to show the damage, and yes it is inside the logo, but I have no idea how it happened, because I bought the car used and in this condition.

When you want to insert a picture, look for the icon that looks like a mountain range - then just paste the url of the hosted image.

Thanks. Does anyone else have any ideas of how I should go about this? I'd like to do it tomorrow.

The problem with doing them that way versus uploading them to Meg's site is if you ever delete your album or the photos included in this post, the pictures will be replaced by a red 'x'. It makes it frustrating for people down the road who stumble across this thread only to find red x's and can't figure out what we're talking about because they have no reference pictures.

                            Two things here:

                            1. We think your plan is, overall, a good one. But.....
                            2. Wow, that paint looks like it's been through heck and back - in some images it almost looks like brushed metal!! What was this car washed with over the years?

You may find that UC on a DA is seriously challenged by this finish. There is a very good possibility that this paint is very hard and resistant to buffing with the method you have planned. In some places in these images it looks like clear coat failure has set in and there is no fix for that short of a repaint. But those areas that look just plain scoured - you're going to be challenged to get all those defects out.

Take your time, work very small areas at a time (definitely do a test spot first to see how much pressure, time, speed, etc you'll need for satisfactory results) and do multiple passes if that's what it takes.

Keep us posted on how this project comes along - we're very curious to see what sort of correction you can achieve here with a DA and UC.

Any updates on this?? I've got an old Benz that needs some restoration as well.
