Pictures from Thursday Night Open Garage - May 26th, 2011
Another busy TNOG at Meguiar's garage last night!
It was sort of the night for light damage control; from a scratch inflicted by a careless pedestrian in a parking lot to a long scuff on crazy delicate paint to a horrible run in with a garage wall (yeah, that one's a trip to the body shop to fix, sorry!) we saw all kinds of issues last night.
Here's the first long scratch, but it was no match for the DA Microfiber Correction System.
Lots of swirls on the roof of the same car, with surprisingly hard paint (G35 Coupe).
A little treatment with the DA Microfiber Correction System and the half and half image tells the story - swirls are gone. We let the car owner finish off the roof.
JT recently had his car repainted with a full color change, and the paint job was actually very nice. There was a bit of overspray on his carbon fiber hood (C2000 mild blue pro clay took care of that quickly) and some light scratches, swirls and a bit of haze as well. Again, it's the DA Microfiber Correction System to the rescue.
One headlight had been replaced but the other was looking a bit dull in comparison. All it took was a little 3000 grit sandpaper and a bit of PlastX on the wool pad from the Headlight Restoration Kit to clean it up.
Here's Tim give the DA Microfiber Correction System a go on his car.
This is the previously mentioned scuff on the crazy delicate paint. This is Kelly's brand new Prius in non metallic black, and the single most delicate clear coat we've seen.
Just how delicate is this paint? SwirlX on a W8207 polishing pad hazes it badly. We ended up needing Ultimate Compound on the W8207 to remove the big scuff, and then we needed ColorX on a W9207 to remove the haze.
You want to talk about crazy delicate paint? Even a consumer grade clay bar hazes this paint, and pretty badly at that. But the car was covered in fallout so we played with a couple of things to give Kelly a plan of action. After claying, which was needed to remove the bonded contaminants, he's going to be facing a hazed car - no two ways about it. But a solid cleaner wax or one step like ColorX, M66 or D151 PRC applied with a W9207 finishing pad quickly eliminates the haze, and then a coat of NXT Tech Wax 2.0 or Ultimate Wax provides great protection and added shine. So Kelly really has a two step process similar to what everyone else would do with less delicate paint, he just manages it with an extremely mild approach.
On the flip side of this delicate Prius paint is the insanely hard single stage white on Paul's (the other pc) truck. It has quite a few swirls in it, and the paint isn't as white as it used to be. About the only thing he's tried in the past that really made a difference was M85 with a wool pad on a rotary buffer. Pretty aggressive approach. Last night he tried the DA Microfiber Correction System on a taped off spot. We couldn't capture the color difference with the camera, but look at the two images below. Both are in focus, but the lack of clarity in the first image is dramatic compared to what the second one shows after cleaning things up with the DA Microfiber. And that process is virtually risk free, even in the hands of a novice (which Paul is most certainly NOT!)

One last pair of lightly oxidized headlights to finish off the night. Again, just 3000 grit sanding and the wool pad from our Headlight Restoration Kit and a little PlastX.
