  • Great Method to Apply M16 Thin

Just thought I would share my favorite method of applying paste wax. Last weekend I waxed my truck with UW topped with M16. I'm sure the UW made the removal of M16 easier, but I think the thin layer I applied was the main reason removal was ao easy.

I apply paste waxes via the DA with a 4 inch finishing pad. Here is my technique.
    1. Make sure the wax in the tin is flat. If not, take a hand applicator pad and flatten it out. Do not use this pad as it will probably be loaded with product.
    2. With the 4 inch pad on your DA, gently put the pad in the tin and do a few light dabs up an down. Do not turn the DA on and do not move the pad side to side or swipe it. All that is needed is a few dabs up and down. This should get a very small amount of product on the pad.
    3. Put the pad on the car and start spreading the product. This should be enough product for 1 panel, maybe 2.
    4. Go back to step 2, dabbing the pad about every panel or when you believe the pad needs more product.

This method worked like a charm. It applies thin and uniform, and is a breeze to wipe off. If you have ever applied M16 too thick before, you know how much of a pain it is to wipe off. I love the product but haven't used it much because of hard removal, but now I have a great way to consistently use it. This method can be used with any paste wax and not just M16.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

Another thing I want to add is that if you do find that you accidentally picked up too much product on your pad, take a towel and clean the pad on the fly. You are just going to end up applying the product too thickly if you try to spread it out, so save yourself the time and sore arms by cleaning the pad on the fly. Remember, the whole point of this is to apply thin thin thin! (and save your arms haha)

This process works great with any paste wax. In fact, we did a write up on the process early last year (Applying paste wax via G110v2 or other D/A) and at our last TNOG we did it with Ultimate Wax Paste.

As Andrew points out, you do NOT want to switch the tool on with the 4" pad in the tin of wax - just wipe it against the product to pick some up, then start spreading it on the paint. You'll lay down a very thin and uniform coat of paste wax this way, and wipe off will be very easy once it's dry.

thanks for the great tip. I have been applying m16 to a w9006 pad using a dull plastic butter knife (my m16 was from when a big batch wound up on ebay and they all came in super soft.) Works like a charm though.
