  • text dropped from post

While replying to a thread I entered the text and previewed the post. I even did a couple of iterations of editing and previewing the post. But when I clicked submit it deleted nearly all of the text. Just the first few characters where posted.

This happened twice in the same thread. The first time I tried to delete the post but the "advanced" edit screen had no delete option. So I just put in an "oops" statement.

The second time, I had the text in another window so I was able to keep copying and pasting until it worked.

Paul, any chance you composed the copy in MS Word and then copy/pasted into the forum? We've encountered an issue where the character code used by Word for things like apostrophes, dashes, quotes and some other punctuation causes some problems. It seems the Word code is transferred in but the forum software still reads it as HTML tagging, and since it reads it as a closed tag it ignores everything that follows and just deletes it. Allegedly this new version of vBulletin supports direct importing of Word copy, but we've noticed this particular issue that contradicts that claim.

Now, if you did not copy & paste from Word........ hmmmmmm. This would be first we've heard of this issue.

      Yeah, that must be it.

I remember way back when an earlier version of the forum did it too. But I've been writing posts in Word for years since then with no problems. Funny how the latest and greatest version of software brings back an old glitch.

It seems "better at handling Word code" has sort of a double meaning. In the old forum software if you copied and pasted straight from Word into the forum, the software would grab all the hugely bloated Word coding that you'd have to sort through in order to make a simple edit. But it seemed to keep things pretty well intact. This new version strips out all the Word specific coding, but it breaks something else along the way.

        Ah, progress!!!
