  • Pictures from Thursday Night Open Garage - July 28, 2011

A great night last night with some cool cars and interesting challenges.

You know you're going to have fun when a cool old wagon like this '60 Mercury comes rolling in.

What you don't like to see, however, is a situation where the car owner used a terry cloth towel and a very aggressive compound, by hand, and instilled this level of marring to the surface. This is the top of the fender of the '60 Merc wagon.

We rolled the Merc into the garage and set about testing a few things. Ultimate Compound and SwirlX were our first two tests. UC removed most of the defects after a couple of hand applications, but it left the paint looking a bit hazy. SwirlX just wasn't strong enough to remove many of the defects, but it left a better finish. M105 was given a go but it yielded results pretty similar to UC. So, what do you do here? Two hand applications of UC (maybe 3 for some of the deeper RIDS) and then follow with a hand application of SwirlX (or maybe Ultimate Polish) and then wax? This is a BIG car and that would be a ton of work. There's a reason power tools were invented!!

So we fired up the G110v2 and put some UC on a W8207 polishing pad.

The results here were much better than by hand, but we wanted to see if we could step things up just a bit. So we gave the DA Microfiber Correction System a go, knowing that the car owner has compressed air at home so he can make easy work of the process. Much faster defect removal than UC on this car, very little micro marring, and a quick and beautiful clean up with the finishing wax. So we reviewed the process with the car owner and put him to work!

Here's a couple of half & half shots after the owner corrected his own mistake.

No, not flawless, but this was the fist time the car owner had ever held a DA buffer so we had him do subsequent areas for a bit longer cycle, a bit more pressure, and slower arm speed over the paint. And out in the sun we get this. Now that is some serious progress!!

Here's another great shot of the damage the owner caused with a terry towel......

.... and here's what the same individual is now able to do with the right tools and just a few minutes of instruction.

One of our regular TNOG attendees brought his 2011 Prius in to see if we could address some shopping cart scratches in the door. Derek Bemiss of Detail Werks was in attendance last night so we let him spend some time with Kelly, teaching him proper use of the DA Microfiber Correction System.

Derek takes care of all the Meguiar's executive vehicles and heads our Ford/SEMA Team every year. We knew Kelly and his Prius were in good hands.

Plenty of other things going on in the parking lot during all of this as well.

    How low can you go?!

Later on we rolled this black beauty, a Mercedes C63 AMG, into the garage to see if we could help the owner take the paint to the next level.

Well after dark we started playing with the AMG, evaluating the finish, and formulating a game plan. Having recently had excellent results on another non-metallic black AMG using D300 Microfiber Correction Compound on a W8207 foam pad (yes, you read that right) we thought we'd play around a bit and see where it took us.

The swirls and other defects in this car were extremely light, but the owner was really looking for that extra pop. He's already tried a bunch of different waxes but wasn't getting to the point he thought the car should be. Truly Car Crazy if ever a man was! But D300/W8207 was fantastic on it's own, even better with M205/W9207 as a follow up, and amazing when topped with Ultimate Wax Paste.

Now this is how a black C63 AMG should look!

Thanks again to all who came out last night, both to learn and to help out.
