  • iPad difficulty - carriage returns

The new format of MOL seems to ignore my carriage returns and not create paragraphs, when replying with an iPad.

Is there a setting to change?

There should be three paragraphs in this posting.

This is frustrating. After editing, the paragraphs all (four) showed up (this is the second edit).

Well, let's give this a go from an iPad and see what's what. Honestly, this is my first iPad post since the upgrade but this issue did not to exist previously for me.So here's my next paragraph after hitting the "return" key twice. Looks good thus far (prior to actually posting this for the world to see).

Re: iPad difficulty - carriage returns

OK, back live on my desktop here and it's obvious that the double carriage return did not result in what it should have. My second sentence, starting with "So here's my next paragraph...." should have actually been a new paragraph. It displayed that way when I composed it on the iPad. Rats.

Hmmmmm...... could it be the HTML handling of the forum software vs the input on the iOS????

Back to the iPad for another test.

Re: iPad difficulty - carriage returns OK how about this? Another iPad post to see if this fixed it.

            Well now, this is annoying.

Back on the desktop after two more iPad attempts.

I'm sure it's all in how the iPad is inputting code here, and the fact that the forum software doesn't like it. But the iPad won't display the icons above the composition window - the ones that let you adjust font styles, add images, etc. Those icons also let you swap between WYSIWYG and CODE editors - and I'm thinking if you could post in code mode rather than WYSIWYG everything would be just fine. But this appears to be another frustrating thing about the iPad.

In the two posts above I went into "Go Advanced" for each post. In the first one I scrolled down to "HTML" and selected "HTML On - Don't Convert Line Breaks" and in the second one I turned HTML off. Obviously neither one fixed the problem.

I can talk to our web maestro and see what his thoughts are, but I'm pretty sure it's down to a compatibility issue between the iPad and the forum software. I find there are a whole host of things the iPad handles poorly when it comes to forums and browsing in general, hence my intense love/hate relationship with the thing.

Do an edit and paragraphs show up after saving the edit.

The Club Lexus forum uses this:

              vBulletin 3.7.3

iPads and iPhones work as expected on CL. Is this the software/version MOL uses?

Did you edit on the iPad? My iPad doesn't even give me the edit button!

As for the software, we're running vB 4.1.4 as the 3.xx versions are no longer supported by vBulletin. Plus this newer version has a built in mobile version available (that we'll be implementing very soon - just working out the new mobile specific graphics, etc) that the older one didn't, among other things. In any event, our web guy is doing some research to see if there's a style setting that can be altered to resolve this so hopefully he'll have a solution soon. If not, our mobile app for the forum is launching pretty soon so that ought to set things right. Hey, I use my iPad for posting when I'm at events like Barrett-Jackson, SEMA, Pebble Beach, etc. And there are several of those things in my very near future!

Re: iPad difficulty - carriage returns

Step one: Go Advanced, enter reply box, hit return twice to create second paragraph. Step two: type second paragraph, follow with two returns. Step three: type third paragraph and push MOL Submit Reply button

Step four: text is posted and there are no paragraphs, hit MOL Edit Post button and type Step four, hit MOL Save button.

Step five: review post. Post has two paragraphs, after Step three words..."Reply button", type Step five, Save again and stop test.

Re: iPad difficulty - carriage returns

Save does not retroactively correct formatting, but does format correctly when adding text. Thanks for checking into this.

David, it should please to know that this issue has apparently been brought up in the vBulletin users community and it, supposedly, has been addressed with the update we're performing in a few minutes. Hopefully later this morning we'll be able to iPad a properly formatted post. Fingers crossed, breath held - we'll see if it works come 10:00AM PDT or so.

I have a little errand to run during that time so if I'm not back in the office to test right at 10:00 please don't ridicule me!!!! I'm picking up a new set of wheels and I'm a bit excited.
