Another great Advanced Class took place over the weekend, with lots of questions and some great work accomplished by those in attendance.
We started out with our typical classroom portion of the program, and since the Advanced Class is a small group this session was pretty casual.
Once we headed out to the garage we started to put some of the classroom instruction to practical use, starting with a hands on demo. We started by DA sanding with a 1500 grit finishing disc, then followed with 3000 grit finishing disc before compounding.
We also showed some hand sanding, here using 2000 grit paper.
Moving on to the rotary, we first talked about and demonstrated a couple methods for cleaning pads; the pad washer and spur.
On with the compounding! Here we lay down a bead of M105 Ultra Cut Compound.
A quick spritz of M34 Final Inspection to prime the pad.....
Bead picked up and we're removing the 3000 grit sanding marks. Here we're spinning the WWHC7 wool pad at 1800 rpm.
We followed that up with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish, experimenting with both the W8207 and W9207 foam finishing pads on this freshly repainted hood.
We also talked about how quickly heat can be created on the paint surface, especially when using a foam cutting pad. After literally just a few seconds with this pad held stationary, the paint was getting dangerously hot.
Following the demos it was time to turn the attendees loose and let them sand down some panels and then buff them back to a high shine.
Nice to see the guys were cleaning their pads regularly!

No, there's nothing wrong with your eyes. This is how a panel should look when it's been sanded evenly and uniformly.
After sanding with 1500 grit notice the near total lack of reflection in the paint.
After refining with 3000 grit you can see reflections coming back in the paint surface.
And after M105/M205 you end up with clear, crisp reflections once again.
