  • Pictures from Thursday Night Open Garage - August 25, 2011

Well, it started out looking like a pretty quiet night, but as it turns out we got some serious work done.

We started off with a Dodge Ram truck in horrible shape - heavy swirls, deep etchings from old bird droppings and tree sap, and enough bonded contaminants that the hood felt like 80 grit sandpaper.

We used the C2100 Aggressive Professional Clay, twice in some areas (!), in order to remove all the bonded contaminants.

Nick then did a quick test spot with the DA Microfiber Correction System.

An evaluation in direct sunlight told us we were on the right track. This is after a single pass with D300/DMC5

This is the kind of reflection we got with just the D300 Correction Compound.

The plastic trim all over the Dodge was a mess, but a little Ultimate Black brought it back to looking like new.

Other little projects were in full swing while the Dodge was getting a major makeover.

This little guy landed on the roof of Andy's BMW after he wiped off an application of Ultimate Wax paste. Great opportunity for a reflection shot.

This 2001 Mercedes rolled in and, while it was in great shape overall, it was pretty loaded with swirls. We did a couple of test spots, one with the DA Microfiber Correction System and a second with Ultimate Compound/W8207 foam pad. Results were darn near equal so we opted for the UC/foam process as this was a more logical choice for the car owner to finish up with at home.

This was the condition of the trunk lid when he started....

And this is what he could achieve with UC/W8207.

Hey Mike I was wondering if you had those couple pictures of my car?

Would the UC/foam take more time and effort to finish? Or would that be about the same as the MF system too?

On this particular car the UC/foam cut almost as fast as the DA Microfiber System. We suspect that in the long haul, depending on what the car owner wants, traditional foam processes will take maybe 50% more time to achieve the same result as the DA Microfiber System would yield. Again, this is on this particular car. Your mileage may vary. But we recommended a more traditional foam process here as the car owner is brand new to DA buffing, does not have compressed air at home, and overall foam is a more forgiving process for a novice.

Hi Mike, I have both UC and W8207 at home. But I do not have a DA buffer like the G110. I tried to remove the swirls on the trunk lid of my white benz using a modified Ryobi buffer. Although the surface of the paint felt really smooth after buffing, i just can't seem to remove the swirls.

Can the W8207 be used on another buffer besides the G110?

It sure can, but generally you need a good quality DA with some decent power, like our G110v2, the PC7424XP or Griot's 6". Do you have the model number of the Ryobi buffer you're using? What year is your car?

              Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I have a 1995 e320 with 2 stage white paint. The Ryobi I'm using is the ZRRB60K 6-Inch Orbital Buffer. I taped the pad with industry strength velcro and fitted a 6.5" meguiar's W8207. UC is applied to buff the trunk lid. I buffed with medium pressure in overlapping motion over the entire trunk lid area.

I'm thinking about getting either the PC7424XP or the Meguiar's G110v2, depending on the product's availability, i might end up getting the PC for now.
