  • Focus RS - Ultimate hot hatch gets the 'ultimate' treatment

Hi everyone, about time I posted here again. What really has excited me is the fact that it's the first time I've used ultimate liquid wax on my rare RS. We in Australia have had to wait a long time for this oustanding product. Of course I used the matching ultimate wash for the shampoo. The wash was all I needed to do to prepare the surface for the wax because the paint work is in pristine condition. While many people were puzzled why I waxed the car (with techwax 2) on the first day I bought it, I knew that if I get in early, it would be so much easier to maintain the paintwork in pristine condition. This has proven to be the case. I'm also lucky because my conditions for detailing a car are ideal, with a nicely cool underground car wash bay. I think this helps alot and it's advantages are underestimated by many people.

About this car. It's a rare limited production German made euro Ford that we in Australia were very very lucky to get. It's the very acme of hot hatches! It's the only car in the world with the unique revoknuckle suspenion that's patented by Ford. The splendid design of the car with the various spoilers, front air dam and rear diffuser is generally modelled from the WRC RS Focus that won Ford two manufacturer championships and made it the most successful manufacturer in the history of the championship. The paint job is special too. It's deep and multilayered. At different angles you can see various delicious hues, of a fruity character, from fresh lemon and lime to ripening green apples. The performance is potent with a 5 cylinder turbo charged engine. The clutch is beautifully weighted and the gear shifts are very precise short throws. The engine note is smooth, sonorous and majestic. The Focus RS is nothing less than a minor masterpiece from Ford.

About the Meguiar's products. The ultimate wash and wax is a great product and that's that. After the wash, in terms of appearance alone, the car didn't even need a wax because it already looked sensational. And now, on to the ultimate wax. I must admit I was a little apprehensive about it at first because people's experience with it have not been uniformly great across the board. There is the problem of streaking, and to a lesser extent, hazing. I'm now convinced the problem is almost certainly at the user level. At the very least, I'm skeptical when someone posts about streaking and never tell us about the conditions under which they are detailing, the equipment they are using, the techniques they are employing and the manner in which they are detailing. Anyway, ultimate liquid wax is the easiest wax I've used. It goes on really thin compared to #26, gold class and nxt 2, and in that sense, may be somewhat difficult to tell where the wax has been applied. Otherwise the gloss and shine is extraordinary. Looking at the car in the full glare of the midday sun, I thought the car looked like an unwraped shiney new toy model but enlarged, if you follow my meaning. but Nuff talk, here are the pictures!!

Your ride is amazing and you really keep it in top shape.

It looks stunning after your detailing session. Great pics as well.

Your glowing description of this car is right up there with the overwhelming positives we've heard from Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear as well as those of Tiff Needel and Vicki Butler-Henderson on Fifth Gear... and here in the States we're dying for Ford to give us a proper RS next year (as promised) now that we've got a proper basic Focus to play with. The color of your car is just stunning, and it's made even more so by Ultimate Wax. Nicely done (and we're just a bit jealous, truth be told!).

Wow your ride is beautiful!!! Not to mention, your paint is gleaming! Great job!

I wish we have that kind of car here in the US. I just love the way your car looks and how aggressive the body styling is.

We've got the Focus ST coming next year. The RS for the latest gen Focus hasn't been announced yet. But the ST will have 247 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque. I think that'll suffice...

SWEET RS though. Man I would do anything to get one of those cars.

The Focus RS is unobtanium in the US, very sad too as the car is a masterpiece. The 2.5 liter 5 cylinder turbo Ford borrowed from Volvo during their ownership period is a fantastic sounding motor with performance to match.

The best the US gets is the Focus ST at some point in the near future, but the 2.0 liter EcoBoost 4 cylinder packaged in a plainer looking vehicle just doesn't seem as exciting.

In any case, beautiful car you have there and thanks for sharing!

Re: Focus RS - Ultimate hot hatch gets the 'ultimate' treatment

Thanks to everyone and thanks to Meguiars.

I did all the trim and dash with gold glass trim detailer and #26 for both sides of the glass and underneath the car as well. I also used gold class leather cleaner and conditioner for the recaro seats. #26 is a wax I'm really fond of and religiously use with every detail I do no matter which other Meguiar's wax I use. What #26 does to glass is magic. Also, I'm totally adicted to detailing the interior with gold class products because they feel so luxurious. I'm almost embarrassed to say how much of gold class trim detailer and leather clearer and conditioner I use, but there is no better feeling I get inside the car than after I've positively pampered the interior with the stuff. When people stand there gobsmacked, I think it's only fair that I do Meguiars the courtesy of letting people know which products I've used to get the car looking like this.

As for the car, there is always the entrenched perception that Americans don't like these kinds of cars and that they wouldn't sell well there. The 300 RS we got in Australia were originally meant for Ireland but their economy went down the toilet and Ford sent them here. It was a miracle. I think it'll also be a miracle if America gets any RS whatsoever because they are regarded as a niche european Ford, limited in product and targeted for WRC fans and car enthusiates. Ford only make them every 5 or 6 years, so I think they are a prized car, neither a super car but far from a being a common car either.

However, I've always liked American car culture too. I think Mark Donohue was a genius and one of the greatest drivers ever, and also, the most legendary car ever made is the Ford GT40.

The pictures were taken during midday in Centennial Park in Sydney. Hence the all the geese and verdure. My friends urged me to take the car to a grungy rundown factory or something like that but I didn't listen!

Re: Focus RS - Ultimate hot hatch gets the 'ultimate' treatment

What a great car . One of my friends has one but in blue. It has to be said its a hot hatch in every sense of the word. I loved my Gti's Peugeots, VWs and not forgetting the series 1 RS Turbo's. Happy days!!!! That was nearly 20 yrs ago and how cars have changed.

I'm shocked to read that in the US you dont even get a sniff of the Focus ST's I had one for around a year and it was great fun to drive and practical like most hot hatches.

I'm surprised no one is importing them into the US. In the UK we get a fair few imports from Italy (Lancia) and Japan (Mitsubishi, Nissan, Honda)

As for th RS maybe one day if the fuel prices drop. Here in the uk fuel prices are crazy!!!!

Thanks for the great write-up and photos. Car does look great too!

Thanks too for including geese and verdure along with your photos. Although I must admit I didn't know what verdure was and had to look it up! Always something new to learn on MOL!

Great car! Why don't we here in the US of A ever get stuff like this? All Ford gives us is old fart 4 door sedans, even in the small hatches like the Fiesta and Focus. Fortunately, I have my Lightning to make up for it.

Jim, surely you've heard of a little something called the Mustang Boss 302? You should go drive one as they are truly awesome (and this coming from a guy who grew up with Mopars!).

Yeah, Mike, the Boss is awesome! I wouild love one, but:

                            1. Lots of $$$$$$ for a guy on SS
                            2. Everyone has a Mustang.

Whatever happened to ideas like the SVT Focus?
