  • Pictures from November 5, 2011 - Saturday Open Class

Our final class of the year, and we had a great day to close out the 2011 season. Beautiful California sunshine through clear and cool skies made for a perfect day, and our demo car (thanks to Scott!) was a bit of a challenge - but we've never backed down from a good challenge!

Morgan handled camera duties during the garage session and he did an outstanding job, so a big thank you to him as well.

This is what we started with - badly neglected paint on a 2004 Hyundai Elantra.

We cleaned up all the loose contaminants with a heavy dose of Last Touch and then started claying. A small area brought up a lot of gunk on the clay bar.

It quickly became apparent that we needed to step up to the C2000 Mild Pro clay to really get the job done.

Even with the consumer clay the class managed to get things cleaned up very nicely. It helps to have a lot of hands on the car at once!

As per our usual process we did two test spots, one by hand and the other with the G110v2.

Our product selection of choice for both hand and DA application.

A little demo showing just how safe the G110v2 is. At full speed, and with lots of pressure, no harm, no foul.

Getting ready to work some Ultimate Compound into the paint.

Some of the deeper marks needed a bit more of an aggressive approach, and so we always test for the presence of unwanted heat while stepping up the pressure. Only slightly warm to the touch, we're still perfectly safe.

This is how dull and lifeless the paint looked when we started. Remember, this is after we cleaned the hood and clayed it.

Even sitting in the garage it was readily apparent that we'd made a huge improvement to the paint on this car.

Out in the sunlight, though, the results appeared even more dramatic.

Well lookie, here; this car has metallic paint!!

That's working by hand on the left side, by G110v2 on the right.

We pulled the car back into the garage and let the students finish off the hood.

A bit of a departure from our normal routine on a Saturday, we decided to attack the headlights on this car.

    A little 1000 grit paper.....

Followed by some 3000 grit paper.....

Now evenly frosted in appearance following sanding, this lens is ready to be buffed out to finish off the restoration.

How much more light do you think this will throw down the road at night now?

Getting ready to start the other lens, but you can clearly see the difference between neglected and corrected.

While the students continue to finish off the hood we keep at it on the headlights.

Half and half... yes, we finished it off!

And that wraps up another great year of classes - see you in January when we start all over again!

Mike - did you use PlastX to finish off the headlights, or something else?

All of our drills were in Las Vegas for SEMA demos so we reached for the G110v2 and a little M105/M205 combo. But we know that PlastX on the wool pad and a good drill would have removed the 3000 grit sanding marks - we do it all the time!
