  • Meguiars Ultimate Paste Wax

I had been using ULW but at the suggestion of my friend Shawn T. I decided to give the paste version of this fine product.

The first thing I noticed upon opening the container was the smell. Usually, odor doesn't matter to me at all but this was just so pleasant I couldn't help but notice it. To me, it smells like a light vanilla smell. I had to be careful how many whiffs of it I took or I'd be spreading it on toast pretty soon.

Next, as soon as I touched the applicator pad to the surface, I could tell how easily this was going to be to use. It really is like spreading warm butter across the paint surface. The ease of use reminded me a lot of M16 which is one of my personal favorites. I tried on purpose to apply it overly thick in a few sections to test the ease of removal. It didn't matter though, the thick parts buffed off just as effortlessly as the normally applied areas. This is a huge benefit, in my opinion, due to the fact that some consumers may not be familiar with the "thin film" technology yet.

Now, I had been using ULW, and I was used to using a little bit more effort to remove the residue but with the paste version there was none of that at all (Please note, I am not saying the liquid version is not as good as the paste. They are just a little different). Just a crisp and crystal clear finish that really accentuated the metallic flake in the base coat. It was right on par with Wolfgang DGS 3.0 so that says a lot!

Now, if you were to ask me whether I were to prefer the paste or liquid I would have to choose the paste because of it's ease of use. But, the liquid has its advantage in the area of compatibilty with plastic trim whereas the paste could stain. For the average joe I would recommend the liquid because of that fact but, for the enthusiast or detailer the paste is what I would go with.

I think the most amazing thing about this line, though, is the price point and availability. Ultimate Wax is right up there with the performance of sealants costing $40 or more but is half the price and is readily accessible at any auto parts store, Walmart, K Mart etc. As the container states, Meguiars has once again raised the bar in car care and they will continue to do so. There's a reason they've been around since 1901. Try this out and you'll understand why.

    Thanks for the review!

I think UW is the only Meg's wax that is significantly different between the liquid and paste versions..

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Ultimate Paste Wax is indeed a great wax! I like much better than its liquid counterpart.

        Re: Meguiars Ultimate Paste Wax

I'm been using Cleanerwax paste n liquid, M16, Nxt Techwax paste n liquid, Goldclass paste n liquid, Goldclass Carnauba Plus paste n liquid. I find that Cleanerwax paste, Nxt paste n old Goldclass paste very hard to apply. But the newer Goldclass Carnauba Plus paste n M16 is easier to apply. My order of Ultimate Paste Wax is on the way from AG. Hopefully UPW would be similar like Goldclass Carnauba Plus paste wax. As mostly I read tht it melts like butter. So hope it would be like what I read.

Thanks for the review, Garage Troll. Personally, I like UW Paste so much that I hand waxed all three of our cars this past Saturday!

Thanks guys! I agree, this is the only Meg's product I can think of as well that differs from it counterpart. I find the liquid works very well on light colored cars. I used it on my father's Subaru Forester and it was fantastic. And the liquid does have the advantage of being compatible with and even darkering. I did find that the paste hid some minor swirls better though. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. This is a big plus to me because I try my best to keep the paint swirl free but as well all know they're bound to happen here and there. This ability to "hide" them keeps me from having to constantly go over areas with ScratchX 2.0.

Bernard, I'm sure you will like it. The ease of application is very similar to M16.

LOL. You were busy Mike! I wholeheartedly agree. It is so enjoyable to use. It's a treat to use it every time. For some reason I prefer waxing/sealing by handing. It just feels so rewarding.

I like working by hand when waxing also. Sure, the wax winds up going on a little bit thicker, but I don't find that it takes that much longer than via DA.

Thks Garage. Yes I love working with M16. It's so easy to apply on the car's paintwork. I'll be looking forward to UPW.

                    Re: Meguiars Ultimate Paste Wax

I just finished doing my new Subaru Legacy today (white pearl paint) with UW liquid, and it looks great. I guess now I'm going to have to get some paste, to judge for myself the difference. Is there a view on longevity of the two. I assume the paste is longer-lasting, but sometimes I just don't know...

                    Thanks.

There shouldn't be any difference between the two with regards to longevity. We have some pretty unique chemistry in Ultimate Wax and that's a large part of why the paste and liquid vary like they do here; the ingredients that make a paste a paste do change things enough that you'll notice it when applying or removing the two products, but that's about it.

Will the paste wax version stain trim (white residue), while the liquid vesion will not? I have read on the web that this is the case, however, the product description on Meguiar's website states in the description for both the liquid and the paste version that it "...won't leave a white residue on trim & plastic."

The paste version can stain trim, yes. It's really the ingredients that make it a paste that are to blame. Still, if you're paying attention when applying and you get a bit on a trim piece, wiping it off immediately should resolve any problems.
