  • Headlight Protectant

Finally picked up some HP as my local Wal-Mart has finally started carrying it.

I started off claying my headlights to remove the Ult. Wax I had been using on them. I then followed with PlastX.

On to the HP. I applied about a quarter -sized amount onto a MF towel. Dabbed it evenly in spots over the headlight, and then worked the product "in" to the plastic. I ended up using WAY too much product. It was a pain to buff off. Much like my first experience with ULW on a black car .

After some huffing and puffing, I finally buffed off the remaining product. I was left with an extremely slick feeling headlight. Definitely left my headlights slicker than ULW did.

On the other headlight, same results, just an easier process, as I used about a dimes worth of product.

Can't really comment on the effectiveness of the product, obviously, However, the slickness of the plastic seemed to be very tactile evidence of the protection left behind, IMHO.

    Thanks for reading!

    Cheers,
    Mark

I have this but haven't tried it yet. I'm curious if it lasts longer than a traditional wax.

No, it's more a wipe on, work in, wipe off - more like a pure polish application than a wax application.

Yes, much longer and with far greater UV protection as well.

During application I felt like I couldn't put on too much. The haze was always slight.

Given the smell, the look, and feel it reminds me of sunscreen!

After application, the surface is really slick. It's been my experience the slickness lasts through two washings, with some rain inbetween.

Maybe adds some slight glossiness to the headlight....simply beacause product is on there. Could be "placebo" though.

This one bugged me because based upon my experience with the product my reaction was "no way" and yet your experience was different, way different. So, I experimented; 2 ways. First on headlights that needed repair. My hypothesis being that maybe the dryness of the lens was to blame. I applied non Meguiars scratch remover, thinking it wouldn't add replenishing oils. No matter how much HP I added (to 1 headlight) removal was always a snap. Next, I guessed maybe the set time duration was the culprit. So, on two headlights, 1 nonM's prep (see above) one prep'd with Plastx ( 2 coats), I worked in sections applying what felt light the same heavy dosage (blotting 1.5mm thickness) to each headlight. I removed the HP after increasing 10 minute increments. I found that in deed after 20 minutes removal becomes increasingly difficult. At 40 minutes, the end of the test, removal required heavy force to remove. Both headlights performed the same. The test was run in my garage with all doors closed, but outside was roughly 60 degF and 40% RH.

I can't say how the environmental conditions affect the removal process because they weren't tested. I'm sure they do though.

Bottom line: letting HP sit on the lens is not a good idea, it'll make removal way more difficult.

For the record here - this is a wipe on, wipe off product and should not be allowed to dry on the surface. As JET_Fusion pointed out earlier there is a noticeable increase in slickness felt on the lens after application, and this is true even when applying with a WOWO process.

                            I would recommend it.

My wife's car's headlights were hazed up. Used PlastX on 'em 6-7 months ago, with HP after the PlastX, then again every wash (about every 2-3 weeks). They still look as good as the day I "un-hazed" them.

As for why my experience with buffing the product off was difficult, as JET_Fusion pointed out, I did in fact let it sit on the headlight. I never used the product, and I figured- "It's a protectant so I'm gonna let it soak in nice and good...". Obviously, don't do this.

                            "Wax on, Wax off"

                            Cheers
