  • Pretty quick question

    Hey everybody,

I'll admit there was a time when I wasn't familiar with Meguiars and went ahead and bought a bottle of Turtle Wax Ice. Here's what I have to say about it: It doesn't do anything to correct the paint in any way, shape, or form. It does not even come close. But I will say that it gave a pretty nice, wet, shiny look to the black paint on the car that I was working on. It seems more like putting baby oil on the paint more than anything else.

That said, my question relates to if that Ice has a place among my Meguiars items. The process I'm considering would be:

    1) Wash with Gold Class carwash.
    2) Clay it (potentially with Dawn to strip off old wax, which I'm fairly sure there is a lot of)
    3) Ultimate Compound
    4) Ultimate Polish
    5) Mirror Glaze
    6) ICE
    7) Ultimate Wax

What do you all think about the potential for ICE to bring out the black a little bit extra?

There's also a smaller subquestion. I just bought Ultimate Liquid Wax, and I still own a good amount of NXT 2.0. I heard that Ultimate is better for dark paint, and a small part of me likes to think that the ICE may end up widening that difference. I have also heard that Gold Class is very effective on black paint. However, it is not a synthetic wax, which worries me because I am working by hand. It would also require that I invest further in Gold Class. If somebody could rank these on what would make the most sense, I'd appreciate it.

Skip steps 5 & 6. Are you worried about longevity of the wax? Gold Class, NXT and Ultimate all look great on black, but Ultimate may last the longest. It's the work done before waxing that can really make a part of the difference. Are you working by hand or machine? Describe the car and it's condition. Thanks.

The car is a 1994 Acura Legend with black paint. I'm not worried about the longevity of the protection or anything like that, this is purely an aesthetics issue. And I'm working by hand too. The mirror glaze will probably end up being dropped, but I'm not convinced that the ICE is useless. That baby-oil effect it seems to have seems like something I could take advantage of. Unless using the ICE would take away from the returns from the waxing or would give no return of its own, I feel like it could end up being worth the time to follow through on.

If longevity is not an issue, then gold class may be the wax for you. As for the ice, it can still be used but not with the meguiars products. Use it for quick wax jobs rather than throw it out, its not a bad product anyway. I'd use it in between meguiars waxing sessions.

And just why is that? Is that an opinion, a preference or fact? Does topping off Meguiar's products with ICE (or any other brand) result in a combustible mixture that will cause the car to explode?

Well, preference. What he wants to do with ICE is up to him. Maybe he may want to stick with the entire meguiars system, or could also be that the different components of the waxes may compromise the durability of the wax.

If you really want to add ICE to the mix, we'd suggest using it as your LSP on top of something like Ultimate Wax. ICE will, according to countless reports, wash away pretty quickly when the car is either driven in the rain or simply washed. If you like the baby oil look, as you described it, then using it as your topper would give you that better than putting something else on top of it.

Thanks everyone for the replies on this one. I appreciate all of them. Thanks also to Michael Stoops for clarifying where it would do the most benefit as far as visual appeal is concerned. That was mostly what I was getting at with adding the ICE to the lineup. I do prefer the Meguiars line in pretty much every aspect, but I figured that I may as well try and use up whatever is left and see if the end result is something that I liked enough to keep doing. Thanks again for the input, everyone. I'll try and get pictures of the end product up once I'm back home from finals week and get a chance to do a good cleaning.
