  • Carroll Shelby -- 1923-2012

Carroll Shelby, father of the iconic Shelby Cobra, winner of the 1959 24 Hours of LeMans (at the wheel of an Aston Martin) and the man who helped Ford go head to head with Ferrari on some of the greatest racetracks in the world - and beat them at their own game - has passed away at the age of 89.

Carroll was a great friend to Barry Meguiar, and Barry often credits Carroll as the inspiration for our Car Crazy TV show; after spending time swapping old "car guy" stories together, Barry thought that there must be an audience out there who would love to hear iconic car guys, like Carroll, telling their own stories, and thus Car Crazy was born. Carroll even offered to lend his voice to one of our commercials a few years ago. You may recall the NXT Tech Wax commercial with the Dodge Viper asking the Shelby Cobra how he got his great shine - yep, that's Carroll doing the voice over for the Shelby, of course!

Below is an early episode of Car Crazy where Barry not only tells Carroll's story but has a nice, extended chat with the icon himself.

I actually met Carol Shelby one time out at the golf course. He loved to hang out at the Bel-Air Country Club in (you guessed it) Bel-Air California (right next to UCLA). My aunt and uncle belong there, and I've had the good fortune to make many trips out that direction. His daily driver was a cobra mustang with cobra rims.

RIP Carroll. You beat the best Europeans on their turf at their own game.

I was very sad to hear that Carroll Shelby had passed. What a great story his life was, and what a tremendous impact he left on car culture as well!

My family was lucky enough to know him and he was a fantastic person and a legend in the automotive world. My mama's boss was also a friend of his and adored him. When he had open heart surgery and I believe his heart replaced he would joke that he had the heart of a 22 year old and would outlive them (as in those his age)all! ll cherish my Shelby Cobra duffle bag even more now. May he RIP.
