  • MF DA Kit vs. UC and Cutting Pad

    Hello,

I am trying to fix my cars paint defects with what I have on hand. The car is a white 2001 Ford Escape. It appears the paint is very hard and does not respond that well to UC with polishing pad. I used my DA on speed 5 with a lot of down pressure with slow, controlled movements. I did about 6 passes in a small area on the hood. The paint deffenately looks cleaner and shinier from the UC, but the fine scratches and swirls still show.

I told my wife I may need to go more aggressive on her car, but I need to spend about $100 on a DA MF system. This is the perfect justification to buying this system, my wife would not approve spending that money otherwise lol. However, I do have a cutting pad that I've never used. Do you all think using the cutting pad with UC would be more aggressive than the MF DA system? If its less aggressive then I will try this method first. Thanks!

So has anybody experienced these two methods and could shed some light on it for me?

Re: MF DA Kit vs. UC and Cutting Pad

I assume you are talking about the Burgundy cutting pad? If so, that is not recommended for use on the DA with UC. If you didn't want to spend the money on the Microfiber system, you could try M105, which is similar to UC but more aggressive. I assume by polishing you're using the Meguiar's yellow pad?

The other suggestion would by to grab a lake country cutting pad like the hydro-tech cyan pad, which tends to be even more aggressive than the Meguiar's yellow pad, but finishes down about the same.

Re: MF DA Kit vs. UC and Cutting Pad

I have the same concern with my 1994 Oxford White F150. I have the burgundy cutting pad but I haven't had time to use it. I thought I would try it on the top of the cab first, before purchasing the MF DA kit.

Let us know what you decide on as it may help someone out in the future.

I have used the DAMF cutting pads before on my 2011 Yukon and worked great. I have removed fine scratches and created swirls by doing it with UC. It yields a seesaw affect because you remove scratches but introduce swirls so it's more work than running a yellow pad with a yellow pad at speed 5 with great pressure. (almost stopping the pad and barely letting up). I did not mind the work because it's therapeutic to work in the garage!! Lol I used M205 to help clean up the swirls after wards with pretty slow arm movements and moderate pressure. The results were great and worth the work. The M205 is a bit more aggressive than UP. I followed up with M7 glaze and 2 coats of wax. First was yellow tech wax (beige bottle) and then UW. worked great.

I wouldn't use UC with the MF DA pads. If I was to buy the kit then I would use the compound and wax that comes with it.

Yes, the burgundy and yellow pad. So why do they make the cutting pad along with their DA foam pads if it is not meant to to be used with a DA? I totally forgot about M105. I would hate to buy a bottle of that stuff and only use it once or have it not correct the paint. Although it is less aggressive than the MF DA kit, so I might give that a go.

The cutting pad can be used but I believe Meguiar's recommends against it because the average person isn't going to like the "extra" work involved with removing its effects. Do a test spot, keep the speed at or below 5 and I would expect to get some hazing/micro marring depending on the paint. I would then follow up with a polishing pad. You'll just have to experiment to see if it gives you the results you want.

Re: MF DA Kit vs. UC and Cutting Pad

We don't recommend using the W7xxx burgundy foam cutting pads on a DA because there is a very real probability of hazing the paint. These burgundy cutting pads are hugely popular with rotary users, however, which is why we make them.

Having said that, if you have really hard paint then the chance of hazing with the burgundy pad is actually reduced. But you can build up an awful lot of heat at the pad/backing plate interface when using this pad on a DA due to it's aggressiveness and the action of the DA polisher.

For maximum cut, and to save some money, you could just pick up a W67DA backing plate, a pair of DMC5 microfiber cutting discs, and a 16oz bottle of D300 Correction Compound. Total combined price, depending on your shopping preferences, would be closer to $50 than $100. You could then follow up with Ultimate Polish on a foam pad and then wax with whatever wax you have on hand. This is actually a pretty common "hybridization" of the DAMF System and one we actually encourage.
