Another Saturday, another great group of Car Crazy enthusiasts wanting to learn how to better take care of the finish on their cars - and motorcycles!
After our usual classroom instruction portion of the day, it was into the garage and some demos on real paint. We always use a car brought in by one of our students, and even though the swirls on this Honda Civic weren't really horrible, they were bad enough.
As always, we start by claying the surface to remove bonded contaminants.
Most of the folks in this class had experience with clay, but for those who didn't we let them take care of the hood.
We then taped off an area to delineate our test spots by hand, and with the G110v2 buffer. Here we are showing how NOT to hold an applicator pad when working by hand. Notice how the fingertips are pressing against the pad: this will result in pressure points working against the paint, and odds are you'll cause some really bad marring by doing this.
This is how to properly hold the applicator pad - pressure is more evenly distributed and you prevent those pressure points from marring the finish. Here we're using Ultimate Compound to remove the swirls and other below surface defects.
Working by hand requires a fair bit of passion behind the pad, so put some elbow grease into it! Yes, this is a tiring process, no doubt about it!
We followed the Ultimate Compound with Ultimate Polish to enhance gloss, and then finished with Ultimate Wax.
Next it was on to the G110v2 DA buffer demo. Technique is critical here if you're going to get results. We start with a W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 polishing pad and speed 5 on the tool.
Wipe off the Ultimate Compound before it dries!
Just as we did with the hand application, we followed with Ultimate Polish and finished with Ultimate Wax. Here we apply the wax with the buffer - light pressure is all that's needed, and just a small amount of product.
Out in the direct sunlight you can see the swirls in the upper portion of the paint, outside of our test spot. In the lower half of the picture, our test spot, all of the swirls are gone and the metallic is much more prominent. Our test spot here tells us that we're on the right track with a process to finish off the entire vehicle.
Here's the car owner, Tyler, trying the G110v2 buffer for the first time.
Jay brought his Harley Davidson motorcycle in and the level of swirls in the black paint was quite high! Here's one of the hard case saddle bags - ouch!
After doing the same process of Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Wax on the hard case, this is what we got. Jay's pretty excited about finishing off the whole bike now that he knows how easy it is to get this type of result!
