  • Pictures from June 16, 2012 - Saturday Open Class

What a great, great group we had this past Saturday - enthusiastic, eager to learn, plenty of great questions. A great way to spend a Saturday!

Jay brought in his 2005 Dodge Magnum that he tells us hasn't had anything done to it 3 years - barely washed, even! No bit shock, then, that the paint was in less than stellar shape!

We were a bit surprised, however, that the level of bonded contaminants wasn't higher than this.

But, the car definitely needed to be clayed and so we clayed.

We then did our usual process of taping off a couple of test areas on the hood, then proceeded to demo Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Wax both by hand and with the G110v2 buffer.

    W8207 pad means Ultimate Compound.

W9207 pad.. could be Ultimate Polish or Ultimate Wax in this shot. Perhaps we should double check with Court's notes!

The results of our initial test spot - buffer on the right, by hand on the left.

We then let the students try their hand at the G110v2 buffer.

Pad flat against the paint, good pressure...... looks like a great start to a buffing career!

We're always ready to give some true "hands on" instruction - make sure the pad is flat, the pressure is good, and movements are slow and steady.

Remember this "before" appearance that was present all over the car?

Well, this is the same spot "after". And this was done by folks who had never used a buffer before!

    Excellent pictures!
I'm surprised how well the students do when it's their first time ever using the G110v2. Every time I view one of these threads, it makes me want a G110v2 more and more.

      Looks like another fun class.
You should save up and get a D/A. I wont go back to doing work by hand.

The students do that well because A) it really is that easy to do, and B) we just have smart and talented students

After the class I was so eager to apply what I learn so I started working on my car and continue on till Sunday noon. That scratch on the passenger door is barely noticeable after I buff it with scratchX. Although I thought about using more aggressive pad or UC but wasn't sure about the self-healing paint. Anyway the class definitely helps an amature like me and plus the pizza was great too. Big thanks.

During class Mike Stoops talked about rounding the edges of a scratch so it wouldn't reflect the light and make the scratch not noticable, maybe I wasn't paying attention but I don't remember him saying how to do it.

Is there a procedure or a write up somewhere on how to do this?

I searched the forum but came up with nothing.

I don't think there is an exact way to "round" the edges. I think working them with a pad and some type of compound/polish (Ultimate Compound) etc... will work well. I took it as he was explaining to us what the scratch looks like visually from a microscopic level.

You won't regret it, they are fabulous machines. You'll never go back to doing anything by hand if you can help it.

I agree! The 110v2 pays for itself over and over again! Many people use the Porter Cable, but to be honest, I like the "feel" of the v2 better. It's more comfortable to me.

I just bought the 110v2 and I must be doing something wrong... I'm not getting the results like you and my car is similar (08 Altima with swirls and some water marks).. I got Ultimate Compound and applied it with the 9207 and then applied some Professional Show Car Glaze with the 8207..

I even did multiple applications with the 9207 and I still have some water spots.. I watched the AutoGeeks video on how to use a buffer too and basically used the same technique..

I washed and dried and did the above. I clayed and waxed about a month ago.. Then when I didn't get the desired results I clayed the hood and tried again..

Don't mean to hijack the thread but it was the first one I seen and it was talking about exactly what I am doing.. I can start a new thread if needed.

                    Thanks

The W9207 foam finishing pad is used for finishing polishes and waxes. It has little to no cutting ability at all. You interchanged the foam pads with the products. You're supposed to use the W8207 foam polishing pads with the Ultimate Compound and use the W9207 foam finishing pads with the show car glaze or wax.

Doh!!! So you think that's the issue then?

Could I have screwed my paint up at all by doing this?

                        Thanks!

You didn't screw up your paint at all. Don't worry about that.

Try using UC with the yellow w8207 polishing pad and let us know how it goes.

                          Look at Mike's original post:

                            Will do. Thanks

Do I have to wash my pads in the washing machine first?

If talking about new, never used pads, no.
But (how to write this?), kinda knock them against you leg, hand (etc) just to be sure there isn't any 'dirt' on them.

If they are 'used', yes do clean them first. As to using a washing machine, can't answer that one (don't have any Meg's pads).
