  • pad spinning off

I was detailing my mother in laws neglected Rav 4. After I clayed the car, I started in with the ultimate compound. Then the pad started to spin off...speeds on the dual action polisher were between 3-5. I switched out the pad to a new 7inch red "cut" pad for a few tough spots on the car...and again, it was spinning off. I eventually went to the black finishing pad. The pad wanted to spin off but it was not as bad as the speed was slower. The car came out ok but what is the deal with the pads spinning off? First time it happened.

Hmm... sounds like there might be a problem with your backing plate.

Velcro back of another pad fell off and stick to the backing plate!?

The pads are still together...old or new. They just won't stick to the backing plate. I think it is the plate. I can't believe, after taking care of the unit, that the plate is done. I have used it 4x. What is the life of the plate typically?

Just to clarify....you are not running the machine before placing the pad on the car....are you?

No, I am starting the machine on the car. I guess I will call the company and see what they have to say.

Did you let the BP get too hot at any time? ...Just thinking out loud... that may have damaged the little hooks.

Just asking...Do you know who the manufacturer is? What size BP do you have? Where did you purchase it/them from?

We'd like to know this too. Matching the right backing plate to the pads is important as not all hook & loop material is created equal, and mismatching them can lead to all sorts of problems, including improper pad mounting.

I have the W6DA backing plate and am using the 7inch 2.0 cutting and finishing pads. It is all Meguiar's stuff. I store the backing plate in the meguiars bag it came in. Is there any special way I should store the plate? What could cause this? Bad plate?

The plate is a w68DA backing plate

Missing a digit, I can't tell it is W67DA or W68DA. If you are using W67DA, then it might explain your problem. 2.0 7" pads should use W68DA. I think W67DA is too small for 2.0 pads.

In fact, nothing sticks to the plate including my polishing cloth or anything else.

Given that it is all Meg's products, give customer care a call on this one.

Please let us know what the outcome is...this (to me) is REALLY strange.
