  • wet sanding; questions; advice,

    Hey guys, I am wet sanding a 2006 350z I had my roof fall on top of my 350z due to direct tv kicking my AC line and water filling up my roof...

    So needless to say I had a shop repaint the car, has orange peel and I called to the bodyshop yesterday and they said there is 2 heavy coats of clear. Safe to say its not a hard hard clear;

    I had the job done back 4 months ago.

    Lastly what should I know before wet sanding this Friday? I bought 1500,2500, and 3000 gritt Meguiars sandpaper...

    How long roughly should I work an area; I know its impossible to give a number but give me a idea. Will I be able to see if the orange peel is being removed or do I have to buff the car to see.

    Secondly would my wife be able to drive the car still if I am not finnished wetsanding or is not a good idea?

    Re: wet sanding; questions; advice,

    We have to ask - have you ever done any wet sanding on paint in the past? Looking at the grits you've picked up it would appear that you plan on hand sanding rather than DA sanding this car. You do have a proper backing pad for the sandpaper, right? How do you plan on removing your sanding marks? Common practice for this is to use a rotary buffer with a wool or foam cutting pad and M105 or similar, but even that requires a much different skill set than a DA buffer requires. Lastly, how do you know for sure it's not a hard clear? We've seen resprays that were hard as nails, and others soft as warm butter. We just want to make sure that your eyes are wide open here and you don't get into serious trouble.

    Let's get through the above and then we can deal with some of the finer points of sanding this Z.

      I am using the sand paper by hand, I was going to do small strokes; side to side motions no larger then 12 inch strokes.

      I have 3M heavy compound that removes 1000grit marks; with a purple pad;; using the lake country kompressor 7 inch foam pad...

      I'll be using the purple pad and orange pad; purple to start then orange to finnish...

      And to answer your question; I have no way to test if its hard or soft, you are right.
