  • Rinse Free Express Wash - Questions

Hey guys, here I go posting another thread via the Android app, let's see how it goes.

I recently bought a gallon size of RFEW. Went to use it today. I'll explain my process.

Truck has been driven in the rain the past week almost, man its been rainy here lately.
    1) Went to quarter car wash, blew off the big stuff.
    2) Got back home, truck was fairly air dried at this point.
    3) Mixed up RFEW in warm water, 3 ounces in 3 gallons of water.
    4) Used Megs wash mitt as wash mitt.
    5) Worked section by section as instructed. Air temp was about 43F.
    6) Immediately dried each freshly washed section. Basically used what is a big bath towel as my drying towel. That's what I always use actually, we have a shelf full of old bath towels made of cotton or whatever.

I think that thoroughly covers my process.

    My questions are these:
    1) When drying, the towel would make an eerie squeaky sound, like rubbing a towel on a surface that isn't waxed. Is this normal? I can assure you my paint has a solid coat of wax on it. Trust me.

    2) As I was drying, it seemed tricky to actually dry the surface, in other words, everytime I did a pass to dry, a "sheet" of water would be left behind. Took lots of passes and rubbing to get the surface to dry.

    3) Does RFEW remove dressings on plastic?? It was getting dark out by the time I finished so I need to double check my plastics tomorrow, but I couldn't help but notice that as I was drying my plastic panels, they seemed to have dried with a white tinge.

    My last thoughts:
I wonder if the air temp was playing the biggest roll in this. It was pretty cold. Normally I would wash my truck at the coin op then bring it home with the heater on in the garage and do drying and waxing etc... In the warmth. I'll have to try again, but in the garage.

It may have been your towels. I know I use waffle weave towels and have zero issues. Try not mixing it at 1oz per gallon. I believe that is for very heavy cleaning. Try 2oz for your 3gallons, this stuff is very easy to use. If you do not have and of the towels I mentioned try just some basic mf towels. I do knw that rfew has no wax in it, thus leaves nothing or adds nothing to the finish.

RFEW is a very effective cleaner and with repeated use at an ounce per gallon it may well be stripping the dressing/protectant off your exterior trim. We recommend diluting it at one ounce per two gallons of water, especially if you're already pressure washing the vehicle prior to cleaning with RFEW.

As for the squeaking noise when drying, we also feel the towels are playing a huge role here and caution against their use. Cotton terry cloth can be quite aggressive on paint, especially older towels. All those cotton loops actually have some bite, and cotton isn't nearly as effective at pulling dirt away from a surface and into the material as microfiber is. Moving to either a waffle weave drying towel or even several microfiber polishing towels is highly recommended when doing a rinse free wash, whether with RFEW or any of the competing products on the market.

Lastly, your suspicion that the cold weather wasn't helping is also valid. But combine all three of these - strong dilution, cotton towels, cold weather - and we would expect some diminished, or at least altered, performance.

Ok thanks for the help. I will try a weaker dilution and also I may invest in some waffle weaves.

Yeah I would second Mike Stoops recommendations....obviously LOL

But, I began using it at 1 ounce/gallon and realized it is far too strong

I put about 1/4 of an ounce or a little less in a 32 oz spray bottle and use it as a presoak. It is very effective

The sheet of water you see behind comes from the strong dilution in my experience. If you lighten up on the dilution, you will see the drying is much easier.

Cotton towels bite hard, theres a local tunnel wash that dries with terry/cotton towels. After three washes your paint will have cobwebbing.

While I am not a fan of rinseless washing since I love soap, I still like using it for clay lube, light interior cleaning, quick touchups, etc. Really is a nice product.

I used to use terry towels for years. Once I switched to waffle micro fiber I was amazed at the difference. One swipe with a waffle weave and NO watter trails left behing and no wringing out. These things are amazing.
