  • Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, 2013

A crazy busy day at Barrett-Jackson today - between 4 demos and tons of questions from interested and curious attendees, I didn't have much time at all for pictures. Hopefully that will change tomorrow, but for now here are a few interesting things from the event.

Check out this crazy hand built body wrapped around a small motorcycle. You can see the seller's feet sticking out from inside the ride, and inside it looks like an old scooter. Pretty cool.

The following cars are all from the Salon Collection. That's the group of very high end vehicles that will sell on Saturday evening, and many of these should bring huge money.

This is the 1956 Chrysler Diablo Convertible by Ghia show car. Designed by Virgil Exner and built by Ghia in Italy, this was one of Chrysler's biggest "dream cars" of the 1950s. It's built on a Chrysler 300 chassis and even has the famous Hemi V8 under the hood.

1954 Packard Mitchell Panther Concept Car. One of 4 built, and one of only 2 powered by a supercharged straight 8. The body is all fiberglass.

1949 Delhaye Type 175 Saoutchik Coupe de Ville. This car debuted at the Paris Auto Salon in 1949 and was subsequently purchased for the show for the incredible price of $20,000. This car was on display at last year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as part of the tribute to the coachwork of Jacques Saoutchik, one of the most flamboyant French coach builders prior to WWII.

The interior of this Saoutchik bodied Delahaye is just as flamboyant as the exterior.

1927 Bugatti Type 38 Four Seat Open Tourer. This is one of the Bugatti road cars that was actually very fast for it's time. Most road going Bugattis were luxurious but not necessarily all that fast. The Type 38 used the same 8 cylinder engine, gearbox and brakes as the hugely successful Type 35A Grand Prix race car, making this road car light, fast and agile.

1952 Allard J2X Racecar. Sydney Allard may have only built 83 cars, but their racing history is legend. This car is powered by a Cadillac 365 cubic inch V8 fitted with a four Stromberg twin choke carburetors. With blistering acceleration and a top speed in excess of 125mph, these were serious racers in the day.

    Wow.

Thanks for taking the time to take and share the pics Mike.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

The 'scooter' is just plain neat! Kinda reminds me of a bumper car with that lower (what to call it?) bumper.

If someone had an Airstream trailer, this would be the perfect accessory for scooting around the campground.

Big crowds today - the buffer demos were always packed and everyone was very enthusiastic and asked tons of great questions. It's always fun to see people that excited about polishing paint!!

But back to the cool cars!

1934 Duesenberg Model J Murphy LWB Custom Beverly Sedan. This is one of only 12 Model J Murphy Beverly Sedans ever built and the entire owner history is known going back to 1934. The chassis alone cost $10,000 back in 1934 and the owner still had to commission the coachbuilder to create the body for it!

1930 Packard Custom Eight Dual Cowl Phaeton. The dual cowl, dual windshield body style was the epitomeof luxury in the 1930s, and this Packard was one of the best. It's price tag was reflective of it's high standing in the automobile world - $3,450 at the time. As expensive as that was, compare it to the price of just the chassis of the Duesenberg Model J shown above!

1931 Ruxton 4 Door Sedan. This car features front wheel drive, which allowed it to sit 10" lower that rear drive cars of the same era. Ruxton only built 500 cars before going out of business, and this is one of 8 sedans known to still exist of a total of only 17 Ruxton cars still in existence today.

1986 Porsche 959 Prototype. This is one of the greatest Porsche models to ever exist, and it's one of only 4 959 prototypes known to survive today. Completely original, down to the tires, this was the start of all wheel drive and monster power for Porsche cars.

This row of hood up Corvettes just caught my eye. I like how they display groups of cars in the indoor pavilion, showing off a unique feature, color combination, etc.

Speaking of presentation and color combos, they always seem to have few of these beautiful pastel colored Thunderbirds paired up, and it always makes for interesting viewing.

And sometimes things just get a bit crazy. This is listed as a 1922 Custom Rolls Royce, but in fact it's a total one off custom body and chassis. The engine, however, is actually a Rolls Royce unit, but it's been fuel injected and turbo charged.

1934 Ford Custom Roadster and 2005 Custom Chopper, both built by Rick Dore, and both finished in the same pastel Caribbean Lime paint.

Plymouth Superbird. Really, what more is there to say!

1949 Chrysler Newport Custom Roadster. Chrysler actually built 6 cars like this for use as Pace Cars at the Indy 500. This is NOT one of the. This is a one off, all metal, custom build. It does use an actual 1940 Chrysler Newport chassis, but that's where the similarities end as far as drivetrain goes. There's a 392 dual quad hemi under the hood, posi-traction, and a Torqueflite transmission.

1949 Cadillac. Billed as the "Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Honeymoon Dream Car", this is one man's image of the car Roy Rogers would have built "had he spent less time riding his immortal steed, Trigger". As "tribute" cars go, this one is pretty over the top!

A great color combination on a beautiful Austin Healey 3000 BJ-8.

Look at the shine on our truck! Our man Mark spent many days buffing this rig prior to making the trip from Fresno to Scottsdale, and it shows.

Barry spent a big part of the day at our rig, and he always draws a crowd.

Shameless plug for the new DA Power System - a before/after demo spot using it along with Ultimate Compound, Polish, Wax.

Not a lot of commentary with today's shots - most of them are good ol' American Muscle though so most of you should know these pretty well. But a special treat to start - the 2014 Corvette.

Check out the wild paint mural on this big rig........

..... but the whole thing looks like this under scrutiny. How would you like to have to buff out this rig???
