I just got it, but it cane with a ring, do i have to put the "ring" close to the pad side, or between the pad and the machine (gg 6" da polisher) thanks

Select the correct adapter from those provided with the backing plate, then use that to secure the washer to the backing plate. That way, when you take the plate off the tool the washer will always stay with it. Never skip using a washer with any backing plate as they are needed to ensure proper clearance between the backing plate and counterweight of the tool. Also, do yourself a favor and snug that adapter down with the appropriate sized wrench so that it is very securely mounted to the backing plate. Failing to do so can lead to the adapter loosening in the plate and destroying the threads. Once that's done, the plate will mount to the tool just like any larger plate will, using the wrench that came with the tool to snug it down.Michael Stoops

Uh?
You have a the little tiny backing plate with the little tiny black adapter?
But all washers go on the DA side.
I had one of these and don't remember any washer. Also tighten it down and I'd even use some thread locker. Mine disintegrated the treads after a while. So I switched to the 3" rotary BP and DA adapter. Much stronger then the 3" DA BP.
