    G220V2 Wobble

    Hi,

    Please forgive me and correct me if this is not posted in the correct section.
    I am trying to determine if there is an issue with my machine.
    I have noticed that if I rotate the backing plate by hand it wobbles slightly.
    For example if I close one eye and cast my eye along the back of the plate as I rotate it with my finger I can see it wobbles, the distance between the back of the plate and the machine at one point throughout the rotation is closer than the rest of the rotation (I would say a few mm).
    I would like to know if this is considered 1)normal 2)acceptable by Meguiar's standards?
    Should I as I currently do expect it to run true with out any visual sign of wobble?
    If this is normal what is the allowable tolerance?
    I bought another backing plate to check if that made a difference and it appears the same to me so I'm ruling out the backing plate as the issue here.

    I was told by the supplier it shouldn't matter as long as it has a pad on which seems unhelpful as I wouldn't be using it without a pad now would I?
    I am mostly concerned because I feel even if the correct pressure is applied, the backing plate as it rotates will be applying a few mm more pressure to the surface randomly.

    This is normal and is usually a function of the insert in the backing plate perhaps not being 100% flat. As long as you don't forget to have the washer installed on the stud of the backing plate you will have no issues with this apparent wobble. There will be no compromise with regard to cutting or finishing ability of the tool, pads, or liquids. You'll have much more "inconsistency" with how you manage to keep the pad itself against the paint than any acceptable wobble could ever cause. Pad thickness and density will more than make up for any differences in pressure that this wobble might exert, as will flexibility of backing plate itself.

    In short: it's completely normal and nothing at all to worry about.

      Great! Thank you Michael, that puts my mind at rest, I imagine its the same with the unigrit sanding discs? will the flexibility of backing plate compensate for the very small amount of wobble?

        The backing plate used with the 6" Unigrit Sanding/Finishing discs is our S6BP and because of the manufacturing process differences you should have virtually no wobble at all. Even so, if there is a very slight wobble it will be absorbed by the foam interface pad that you should be using along with this backing plate when sanding. We never recommend sanding without this interface pad.

              For orange peel removal you generally would not use an interface pad. A strong exception to this is when working on factory OEM paint, just because the clear is so darn thin. On a custom paint job with plenty of clear where it's completely safe to quite literally mow down the texture you'll get that job done faster without the interface pad. But once you've leveled it's a good a idea to put the interface pad for all of your refining steps (ie, 1500 grit, 3000 grit, etc).

                Thanks Michael, the panel has been resprayed and has a super texture so I'm going to carefully deal to it with unigrit 1500 initially then 3000 and see what results I get.
