  • 1999 Red Porsche Carrera Paint Correction

So, this job was for a new customer who just found me online through Yelp and wanted to get all his cars cleaned up and the paint corrected as none of them had been professionally detailed in at least five years. The inside of this car was in great shape and just needed a quicker detail done in there, and the outside was clean, but needed the a lot of TLC toward the paint; the majority of the day was spent compounding and polishing the paint. After doing a couple test spots, I ended up with the following plan:

    Rinseless Wash with RFEW
Decontaminate with the fine grade Speedy Prep Towel
Compound with M105 and a cutting disc
Polish with M205 and finishing pad
    Seal with M21

The sun was really bright in most of the pictures which helped show the swirls (and lack-thereof after), but wasn't great for doing justice to the red color (in either the before or after shots).

    So a couple before pictures:

As you can see, the color just seemed almost light red with the bright sun (using my phone for pictures probably didn't help either, but it is what it is)
And some sun shots before: Roof

    Rear Spoiler:

    A couple side panels:

    And the Hood:

As you can see, a ton of swirls all over, but after a full afternoon of polishing it up, the results were fantastic!

I didn't think to tape a line and do a 50/50 shot (still getting used to documenting the work with pictures), but I took a before and after shot of the hood and cropped them into one photo to see the dramatic change. (Again, the iPhone distorted the color for some reason on the before picture, but you can still tell the improvement in the swirls)

And some more after sun shots:
There were a couple stupid wispy clouds that showed up in the reflection on some of these; I felt a little like I was fighting my camera more than the paint that day.

I pulled it in the garage for a couple under the fluorescent lights:

And a couple reflection shots for fun:

This spoiler took so much work by hand because the DA couldn't fit in so many places, this took way longer than originally anticipated. but had to be done to match the rest of the car.

My personal favorite shot from the day with the reflection of the house and trees off the back end:

    Thanks for looking guys

Re: 1999 Red Porsche Carrera Paint Correction

Oh yeah, and the customer was floored by the final outcome of the car, but wasn't there to show me his enthusiasm before he left, so he sent me this awesome follow-up a few days later via email:

    Hi Jarred,

We drove the Porsche out to dinner last night; we like to eat outside on the patio with our dog, and the food at Pasta Nova is fantastic. The car got looks from many people. While driving into the parking lot, two guys in another car were staring at the car with the biggest grins on their faces. At first I thought 'is something wrong with the car?' But no, they were stunned by the beauty of the car! While dining on the patio we overheard several walkers by commenting about how beautiful the car was. They would stop and talk about it, walk around it and just admire it. Later, three soccer girls, in uniform with their mother or coach asked us if the Porsche was ours and asked if they could have their picture taken by it. Of course we said yes. They gathered around the car for a photo session. I have had the Porsche since ~ 2004 or 2005. It has always been a beautiful car but it has never had this type of 'over the top' stares, smiles, positive comments and even a photo shoot with a soccer team. How cool!

You truly did an exceptional job. You should be very proud of the quality work you do.

Cheryl and I look forward to the transformation of our other vehicles.

    Many thanks,

I love it when my customers follow up with me and when they truly admire the work that I do, it makes this job even more satisfying than it already is

Great work Jarred! Very nice car too..

That letter from the owner must have been the icing on the cake!

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

I used 105 with a MF cutting pad (a couple of them), 205 with a foam black finishing pad, and M21 with a foam black finishing pad.

Thanks again guys for all the kind words; it means a lot coming from a lot of you who probably have more experience at this than I do.

Exceeding my customers' expectations is the number one goal in every job I do, and getting responses back like his email remind me why. This job rocks

                            Great work man!

the car was so relective that it made your pics "hot" meaning whitish and over exposed!!!! ....

When doing exterior pix, especially when sunny, try setting the ISO to 100, and it that isnt enough cutting then down the exposure.... Depends on the camera type tbh

                            it looks GREAT!

and you get at least 2 more cars outta it it sounds like.. NICE

Thanks for the advice on the camera; it's an iPhone, so not a ton of options, but I'll see if I can figure out any way to do this with an app or something.

And yeah, he did have me do his other two cars (a silver Audi TT and a black Range Rover). I'll post a new thread on the Range Rover - once I find the time between my crazy busy summer schedule, new baby, and my stupid idea to try and redo my website at the wrong time of the year. The before and afters on the black paint turned out great though, and worth the time it will take.
