  • Pictures from Thursday Night Open Garage - October 24, 2013

Our last TNOG of 2013 - the house was packed and we had some interesting and rather unique projects to work on.

First up, this wheel was to be a test for the owner to see if we could come up with a process that would restore all four of them for his car.

Out comes the DynaCone and our Heavy Cut Metal Polish....

It seemed to be working pretty well so we handed it over to the owner and let him do the work.

    Now that's more like it!!!

Yikes! This is not how the paint on a BMW 550i should look, is it?

A test spot with the DA Microfiber System and the swirls are gone!

Once again, time to put the car owner to work!

    Now that's more like it!!!

This is a really strange situation: this is a rather new Dodge Charger that originally came with factory installed vinyl graphics in these scalloped areas on the hood. The owner didn't want them on so he pulled them off, but it appears that the adhesive actually etched the paint. There is heavy texture and some discoloration as well.

We started out by compounding with the DAMF System but it was quickly apparent that this just wasn't going to be anywhere near aggressive enough to fix the problem, if the problem could even be fixed at all. So we pulled out a 3000 grit finishing disc and did some damp sanding on one area.

All those little spots are still shiny, which means they are all well below the surface of the paint that has been sanded with the 3000 grit abrasive media. And you can easily feel this with your fingers, which is a really bad sign. The only to fully remove these marks is to sand the paint totally flat, but that would essentially remove all of the clear coat. Not a good idea. So, we stopped here and just buffed out the sanding marks.

Here you can see where we sanded and buffed (the lower section) compared to what was presented to us (the upper section). While certainly better, there is still an awful lot of texture in the paint. There really is only one fix for this - repaint the hood.

Still, once the entire hood was buffed out the overall look was much better than when we started.

We need to thank John (ClearlyCoated) for supplying some of these images to us as they really helped to complete a couple of these stories.

We also want to thank everyone who attended our TNOG events throughout 2013, and we hope to see more of you next year!
