  • E39 - 530i Paint Correction

    Hi to All Detailing Mates,

After practicing on a hood from Junkyard, with everybit of info i could grasp from Gurus here and some other forums (though gurus are mostly the same )

I tried to do my best on my 2001 E39 530i. I'll try to explain my attempts step by step, altough my phone battery died during the sessions, so unfortunately not many pics.

First i masked the crevices and some parts which were vulnerable and would end up being a pain in the a.. after the detailing session

A closer look to the finish, you can clearly see the swirls and serious oxidation from years of "wrong washing techniques" and for me more importantly "wrong drying techniques".

Think twice before you get your car washed in a regular car wash

    Another glance from distance

In the picture below, i tried using the yellow cutting pad from Lake Country, in combination with m205. It more or less cleared the haze on the paint, but not anywhere close to acceptable imho (e39 clear coat is really hard and keeps asking for wool pad )

See the difference on the right and left sections:

Then i stepped up and increased the abbrasiveness level to the Meguiar's light cutting WOOL Pad (yellowish) and combined it with m105

    Come to the feast

I don't know what you call this in English but in Turkish slang it is called "rabbit ears" (my hand behind my head doing the finger expression)

    Another pic of the hood

    roof

Below are some pictures taken in the daylight

Check the discount at Mc D.. sometime

I didn't dress up the engine and the bay, just cleaned it. I' ll put on some make up on it soon

For the whole project, i merely used Makita 9227cb rotary buffer. I believe i did it without noticable holograms, except the one on the drivers panel i saw under direct sunlight(God beam ). I was very exhausted, i guess i overlooked it.

For the paint correction, i used the speed setting at 3.5 (1800-2000 rpm) and for the polishing and finishing mostly at 2 (900rpm).

Though some ppl told me to do the polishing with the lowest setting, i don't think you can do a healthy polishing at the lowest setting (500rpm) Maybe the finishing could be though.

I' ll check again and do some parts i overlooked (the hologram on the door) with the black finessing pad, what do you guys say?

BTW: this is my first serious project, i just practiced on a hood from the junk yard and took my own risk on my own car. Fortunately i did it without any serious damage.

    Keep on rocking

Hi Emre, and welcome to MOL! That is one heck of a first post here, and you did an outstanding job bringing this Bimmer back to life - it looks fantastic now and it was a serious mess before you started!

We like that you started slow and stepped up as needed, especially since this was your first project of this kind. A very experienced detailer would likely have started with a more aggressive combo, but that's after a lot of experience and plenty of hours buffing. For a first timer you did exactly the right thing - a test spot with a not overly aggressive liquid/pad combo.

If you could finish this out almost completely hologram free that tells us you did a great job keeping the pad flat against the paint and moving it slowly over the paint. Your final polishing and finishing steps (we assume with foam pads and M205?) should have easily removed any holograms you might have created with the wool pad/M105, and it certainly appears to be the case. That you did find some light hologramming on one panel is probably to be expected, especially for a first timer. All in all, we'd say you did a truly fantastic job here, and if this is how you handled your first project, we think the sky's the limit for you!! Well done!!

        Thank you guys.

Actually i really paid attention to my arm speed. I did exactly as you guys showed in your tutorial videos.

Especially on horizontal surfaces, i made sure i could handle the machine with one hand, so that made me sure i didn't fight the machine (i just did smooth motions to guide it)

I used Lake Country white polishing pad together with M205 for the polishing session. The 205 has a more oily feel and no dust. Working and playing times made me feel comfortable, tho i can't say the same about 105. I guess i'll have to practice more with 105. On the contrary, 105 does its job very quickly so i humbly advice ppl against playing with it for long periods like they do with 205.

What do you say about the polishing and/or finishing rpms with rotary? Setting it to level 1 wouldn't suffice?

Also, do i require an additional finishing after polishing with a foam pad/205 combo?

        Regards,

        Emre

I missed this the first time around, but... Nice Work!

Have you done any other projects with the rotary since?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.
