D114 Rinseless Wash Setup

Hey guys, I finally setup my rinseless wash bucket and figured I'd post step by step pictures for anyone who's thinking about trying an alternative to the traditional 2BM. It's really quite easy.

This is the Gary Dean Method[credit to him for originating this approach]

1st I started by using quality microfiber towels. In this case a new batch of Megs Supreme Shines. I pre washed them in clear/free liquid detergent/warm water.. Then dried on low heat, removed tags & folded..



Once folded I layed them into a 5 gallon bucket in a cross pattern in order to maximize space. I settled on 15 towels and it took about 3/5 of the bucket[as you can see here]



Next I mixed up my dillution. I was undecided whether to go with 1:128 or 1:256, so I mixed up a gallon of each just to see the difference. [left is 1:128/right 1:256]



I decided to stay with the 2 different dilluted gallons figuring it'd give me a blend that was neither too strong nor too weak.. In goes the 1st gallon at 1:128



I found out 2 gallons wasn't going to be enough to cover my 15 microfibers...



Good thing I bought plenty of distilled water.. 1 more gallon mixed at 1:128 brought it to the ideal level for 15 microfibers.



Gamma Seal Lid ensures it stays airtight, leakproof and ready at all times. All I need now Water Magnet for drying.

I think this is awesome for the winter months, but I'm still old school for the summer with a hose and bucket. But at that ratio look how much product u get out of 1 gal of it!

I just got done doing a rinseless wash on my parents Trailblazer which I polished just over a week ago.. Reason I had to polish it was because I found out my dad had been washing it every now and then and lets just say his techniqes would make everyone here cringe. Lol.

The new Kia means this Trailblazer sorta for sale now.. So it's mainly just been parked for the past week and we had a rare night of rainy weather here a couple of days ago.. So it was a perfect candidate for a rinseless + I was in no mood to drive it on the lawn and risk loosing it's parking spot:p

This is how cherry it looked just over a week ago after I went over it with M205.



And this is it right now after a rinseless wash right there on the street.



No more nasty rain muck...



Now I've got to tell you about how Easy this was.. I mean it was EASY. I was seriously done with the whole drivers side[not including the windows] in maybe 5-6 min.

I'm having a real hard time figuring out how some people I read about on other forums talk about using tons of towels for this... I only used 3! And that includes the windows & bumbers. Btw this D114 does a fantastic job on the windows. So good that I'm not even going to bother going over it with D120 this time. As long as the finish is dialed in, [properly waxed] the dirt glides off so easy, and the water magnet is perfect because it's softer than other waffle weaves I've tried. I'm happy

@Jarhead. If there was an over/under line on how many gallons of D114 you'd go through in a lifetime, it'd probably be at 1. Lol.

Btw, this may be the Gary Dean method, but if it wern't for reading Michael Stoops' advice on how to implement rinseless/waterless, I probably would've waited even longer to try this. There's so much good stuff I've learned from alot of great people since joining MOL.

I can't say enough about the awesome people I've been fortunate to meet so far in the detailing community. [that includes you Guz! Lol. Finally met The Guz in person this past TNOG] So much more to learn, and hopefully more great people to meet aswell.

I agree with u there! I've learned so much here and yet to meet anyone in person but online met alot of knowledgeable people that its upped my game so much. I still don't know as much as u people but when I talk to family and friends they think I'm a pro.

And now when I drive by our local car wash and detail shop I Kringe looking at the people who don't know any better and the damage that's being done to their cars cuz them guys use the same towels after watching them drop them and then pick em up and start using them again.

It was nice meeting you as well. I'll try to get out there more often next year. It's not easy having a 40 or sometimes 40+ hr work week full time job.

Rinseless washes are great. I have been using them more often. Good way to keep one's personal car looking good all the time. One quick tip is to save whatever you don't use in a spray bottle. You can use that as a waterless wash or to wet the panel prior to rinseless washing to loosen the dirt (especially on a car that has moderate dirt).

In addition to that you are helping with the drought situation here in Cali.

D114 is great because it leaves nothing behind so you can follow up with D156.

I always save my used Rinseless wash in another bucket and keep, then when doing another rinseless wash pour out about a gallon or so into a 2 gallon bucket and use just for rims and add about another 1/2 an once to that.

I agrre with you guys this stuff is awesome, has saved me so much time and great for a couple of my clients that has older cars were I don't want to spray any water onto.

This is a great method for using D114, no doubt about it. And as Ric said, we must give credit where it's due as it was Garry Dean who first popularized this method. A couple of quick tips for maximizing this method:

• Do NOT wring the towels out when you take them out of the bucket - keep them dripping wet when working on the paint.
• Never, EVER return a dirty towel to this bucket - doing so will contaminate the whole set up and compromise your wash process.
• If you sink 15 towels (or any number of towels for that matter) and find you still have plenty of solution left after you've gone through all the towels, just toss a few more clean towels in and continue on. A couple gallons of water will wash upwards of 8 to 12 cars, depending on how dirty they are.
• Personally, I like to use just 4 of the 8 sides of a towel folded in quarters. Once I've used it that much there isn't a lot of solution left in the towel and I'm not comfortable using it on the paint any longer. But that doesn't mean they can't be used for something:
  • After using 4 sides, toss the towel onto a grit guard that's just sitting on the floor - continue stacking towels like this as you go
  • When finished cleaning the paint, grab one of these "used towels" and wring it out, then expose an unused side and start cleaning the windows
  • Additional "used" towels are great for wheel cleaning when you're done with the paint and glass - wring out a "used" towel, pre treat the wheel by spraying some diluted D114 onto it and "agitate" with the towel.
  • Finally, the clean sides of a "used" towel that has been well wrung out will do an amazing job cleaning the interior. Yes, you read that right - D114 is an amazing interior cleaner! Coupled with a microfiber towel you'll be blown away by the crud it can remove from steering wheels, door panels, seats, etc. It's perfectly safe to use on vinyl and leather, so don't be shy!

@MichaeI Stoops. I stumbled upon this tip this past weekend while detailing the interior of the Kia.. I had already vaccumed the inside when I noticed the doorjambs were a bit dirty. So I rung out a towel from my rinseless bucket and wiped down the doorjambs.. That lead to flipping the towel over and wiping down the floorboards, 1 thing lead to another and suddenly I was wiping down the door panel. It worked so great I figured why stop there, I ended up wiping down every last part of plastic & vinyl on the interior! You wern't kidding, it worked great! It even removed a couple of scuffs on the plastic and was the perfect prep for the New Car Scent Protectant.
