  • Questions related to Meguiars DA power system

    Hey guys,

This is my first detail done to my lovely LS430. Results were really cool at first, but not so much after adapting a new "detailer's eye" where smaller things matter.

I'm using the DA tool, I got it in a pack of UC, UP, UW.
I use burgundy with UC, Yellow with UP, and black with wax.

I think at first I was amazed because I haven't done such a thing before.

My results left some scratches and swirls that really started to bother me and I had to call it quits, because I needed to fix what's wrong before I keep going on doing the whole car.

I tried using M105 with the burgundy, but results were almost the same and the M105 was just way more difficult to remove.

Now, after reading one of the posts on here, I think my cordless drill isn't strong enough.
It's a 18V cordless drill with 1200 rpm. And then I found out that you actually loose some of that power in the 9:1 ration because of the way the tool functions.

My question would be, do you guys think that could be the problem?

Should I buy or rent a bigger drill?

Or pull the trigger on a fancier tool, like Meguiars G110v2 or Rupes?

    Thanks.

Here are some pics of my work.

Your help and advise is much appreciated.

Looks like it's doing it's job to remove swirls. It is recommended to use a corded drill rather than a cordless. If you want to invest in a DA, take a look at the new MT300 that should be out sometime soon.

Unfortunately the images you've posted are on a file hosting service blocked by 3M so I can't see them from here at the office. But, you mention using a cordless drill and we're pretty sure that's where things are going wrong. We always recommend using a corded drill as cordless units, unless you've ponied up for one of the industrial strength $400+ units, just don't have the torque needed to keep that pad spinning, under pressure, for any length of time. And you need that pressure and time to do any sort of real defect correction. While a full sized DA like our new MT300 is a definite step up in overall defect slaying ability, only you can determine if spending another $200 on a tool makes sense for you. Of course, once you have one of these tools you'll wonder what took you so long to get one, but that's a different story.

Our recommendation: first off, at the very least go out and rent a good corded drill and give this another shot. The DAPS system can indeed do some great work, with the correct power behind it. Will it be as good as a full sized DA? No, but we realize that not everyone is chasing a true show car shine on their car. Detailing forums tend to get this attitude that "it's not right unless it's flawless", but that's just not practical for most people. And it's just realistic all the time, either. But the DAPS system will take the elbow grease out of the equation and let you step your game up to a much higher level, without the investment of a full sized tool. Give it another go with a good corded tool and we think you'll gain a new appreciation for the DAPS.

Thanks for your helpful reply Michael. I hope you can get a look at the pictures any other time. As I'm nit allowed to post attachments yet.

Haha, I was in the phone about an hour ago with a tool rental place.
I must say, $40 a week for a really good drill is not that bad. By they also do have a random polisher.
I might give them a try and see what I end up with.
        Thanks.

You can hose your photos on photobucket. Or you can compress them and upload them into your gallery on the forum.

For $40 you can "buy" a decent corded drill at WallyWorld that will do the job. (then you will have the drill for next time) The DAPs and a cheap corded drill is all you need and is dandy for removing small scratches/swirls here and there. If your vehicle is covered with blemishes, then a full sized DA might be your best bet.

Sorry just a question, I didn't notice how you prepared the paint prior. Unless it's on a different thread, did you clay before you started tryi g to correct the defects? If not that also might be some of your battle. Like I said, if I missed where you said you clayed, my apologies, but if not, it's a must before you start.

Re: Questions related to Meguiars DA power system

Oh yea, might've not mentioned that. But I did clay using the Meguiars kit.

I rented a DeWalt drill today, corded one. I got some good results.
I will share them tomorrow, since I couldn't get good pictures when the sun was almost down.
