Back in mid February of this year we shot a commercial for our new Paint Protect product, and since this product is pretty special for us we knew the commercial had to be pretty special, too. Shooting took place over two days at a ranch outside Thousand Oaks, CA - the same ranch where the movie Seabiscuit was filmed, along with numerous other movies, TV shows, and even that famous Budweiser Super Bowl commercial with the Clydesdales leaving the barn and the dog following after it.
We arrived bright and early on a Friday morning and were greated with this sight - one of the oldest buildings in the valley, dating back to the mid/late 1800s. The caretaker told us that when this barn was built the population of Los Angeles was a mere 9,000 residents, and the Battle Little Bighorn (AKA Custer's Last Stand) hadn't happened yet.
The natural lighting pouring in was simply spectacular. You can fake a lot of stuff in Hollywood, but this natural lighting is really, really hard to beat! The commercial opens with the truck getting a coat of Paint Protect applied inside the barn to start it's year.
Even the table with product and materials for the shoot looks good in this light!
Summer time and we're working hard on the ranch. Outside, tossing bales of hay from the truck meant using a specially rigged truck to hold the camera, reflectors, etc. You'll notice the bed of this truck is white while the rest of it is brown. The primary truck was brown but a second, identical truck couldn't be located in time and we needed a secondary camera rig for shots like this. So we had some vinyl wrap printed up in the factory color and partially wrapped the second truck.
It takes a pretty big crew to wrangle all the material needed to shoot something like this. From camera people to makeup, wardrobe, craft service, and all the other technicians handling all the equipment we had a crew of about 60 people on hand.
All this basically to hold a single camera!
Fall approaches, so we set up some colorful fall leaves for the truck to play in!
Winter sets in and on a beautiful 80 degree day in SoCal that presents some challenges. But through the magic of Hollywood we made it snow.
Getting set up for the snow fall - white cotton batting with real home made snow and ice added to create the effect. See that big red drum just to the right of the barn? That is full of home made snow and ice!
What we see, and what the camera sees.
The snow thaws, and spring has sprung! With spring comes the rain, and boy did we make it rain!! Of course, Paint Protect did it's thing, showing off relentless water beading.
This is how you make it rain on a bright, cloudless and sunny day in SoCal!!
So, collect all the footage, spend some time in the edit bay, throw in some fun computer graphics to bring the truck to life, and you get this - the final 30 second commercial.
