  • Review - D180 Leather Cleaner & Conditioner & D181 Leather Cleaner

    Here's a quick review of D180 and D181.

My brother is on vacation so he left me his car while he is gone. Was a perfect candidate for some product reviews.

I have used D180 a few times and this is the first time I have used D181.

Tools used: D181, brush, microfiber towels, D180.

Sprayed it directly onto the surface. The benefit of the detailer bottle is that it has an adjustable nozzle to control the spray pattern and amount of product sprayed. What I did do was a test spot in an inconspicuous area prior to spraying it onto the seat.

I agitated the area with the brush that has soft bristles that will not tear the leather. Wiped the residue off with a microfiber towel. With D181, the leather does not feel sticky like APC does.

Here's something surprising. There was still some D180 that was applied back in early May. Seems pretty darn durable considering he daily drives this car.

Applied a fresh coat of D180 with a microfiber applicator. The microfiber applicator will give more cleaning power than a foam applicator. The microfiber fibers get into the leather more than a foam applicator. I usually let it sit on the surface for about a min and then lightly buff to knock down the shine and remove any excess product (if there is any). It does darken the leather. It does not leave the leather feeling greasy, oily or slippery. It dries and feels like newish leather. It will not transfer onto one's clothing.

Here is the towel after doing a majority of the seats.

    Final thoughts:

The cleaner worked very well. It does work if just applying to a microfiber to remove a top layer of dirt and grime. When agitated with a brush it will get into the cracks and crevices to release even more embedded dirt and grime. Especially those interiors that are heavily soiled. The leather cleaner and conditioner is an all in one product. It can be used to remove light dirt as a stand alone product. It will leave a protective barrier on the surface. It's quite durable and works very well in between those deep cleanings to keep the leather clean and looking good. This is a great combo if used together.

    Nice post!

What year is that car? Grand Prix?
I have that same bottle sprayer you're talking about. Except mines filled with APC@10.1 lol.

Are you sure that's D180 still on his seats from long ago? Or could it possibly be that oily texture that seems to form on leather after it hasn't been cleaned in a good while?

How would you compare D181's cleaning power compared to D101@10.1? The fact that you notice a non sticky result compared to APC sounds appealing. Does it smell good?

His is an 03. I'm pretty sure it's still on the leather given that he wears jeans like 95% of the time. The tape line looks pretty even after I cleaned that area. If it was some sort of build up I oils, I would expect it to be more splotchy.

I have not used APC to clean leather in a very long time. I did not like the sticky feeling it leaves behind. So I would use the Gold Class Leather Cleaner. It's quite similar to that.

It does have a chemical scent to it. I did not find it to overwhelming.

I find that "oily" surface I'm trying to describe more like greasy or shiny.. Can't seem to find the right word at the moment.. From my experience it ends up covering all areas of the interior even if only 1 person spends time in it for a few months.

My guess is there's lots of factors that cause that film of dirt to eventually show up. Sort of how interior glass eventually needs a proper cleaning no matter how clean we Think we are

Hence the reason why it's a good idea to periodically do a proper interior detail like you took care of for your brother.

          Nice work Michael.

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Could also be a possibility. Well whatever was on there is gone. I would think D180 would last awhile (1-2 months) as well and not be gone in say a matter of a couple weeks. Only Mr. Stoops can answer that.

Yeah he is. He's not as meticulous as I am with my car so it is sometimes a good test bed for things.

Same exact story with my brother... It's hard to get him to sit still long enough to do a complete 5 step on his car. It wasn't until he went out of state for vacation that I was finally able to take my time and give his Caddy my version of the royal treatment.. But the dork didn't leave his keys.. So he missed out on the full interior detail I would've hooked him up with.

About 6 weeks after I detailed his car he text me all amazed at how clean his car had stayed for so long.

Big difference between the everyday Joe wash and a full 5 step correction with maximum protection on all surfaces of the vehicle. 1st time I was actually super impressed by silver paint. Oh yea

Great write up!! The before/after is interesting to say the least. It's likely a combination of some remnants of D180 and actual dirt that's causing the un-treated side to look that much darker. D181 is, as you've shown, a highly effective leather cleaner - especially when used with a good leather cleaning brush. The moisturizers in D180, and they way they're delivered and stay put, is a great way to keep leather (and the factory coating over the leather) properly hydrated.

Been enjoying D180 for a while now as my go to leather conditioner. How does D181 compare to AP leather cleaner? Hopefully a bit less harsh?

D180 is good stuff. Unfortunately I never used the AP leather cleaner so I can't compare the two. D181 worked very well and it's hard to beat for the price.

I gotta say, 180 left my Lexus leather way too oily. I have a gallon, used it once and it sits now. Pretty simple to use, so I don't know how I could have done something wrong

A little does go a long way. What type of applicator did you use? Did you go over the area with a microfiber to remove any excess product?

I'll pick some up and give it a go. I find the AP stuff really good for nasty jobs, but it is pretty high on the PH scale and I find I have to be really careful with it.

                            This. Gotta wipe off excess.

I used a foam applicator, used light coat and immediately wiped. Seemed like no matter how many times or how hard I scrubbed, I couldn't get greasiness off
