Everyone will have a different answer for this.

Personally I am a PPG guy and love the Deltron line. One of my friends shoots Sikkens and loves it. Always comes out glassy smooth.

Dupont makes a nice clear that is damn near impossible to run.

Remember it will all be about prep work and the final wetsand/buff after the clear is cured.

You might want to look into the use of a clear coat over a dedicated single stage paint. In a two part paint system (base or color coat/clear coat) the process is not the same as simply adding a clear on top of a single stage color coat. The color coat in a two part system is not glossy at all and can not be made to appear glossy unless the clear is applied over it. It is possible that you may even have adhesion problems if you attempt to shoot a clear over a true single stage paint.

A really high quality single stage black paint job will have a classic look (deep, rich and wet) that can never be matched by a clear. But a modern base/clear system will be more durable and most likely impart a sharper shine - if that makes sense. While trying to combine the two might sound like a great idea on the face of it, it may not yield the result you're after and it could be a heck of a problem, too.

Check with the paint suppliers for their take on this to be absolutely sure.

clear can be applied of any ss paint. the clears posted is for ss paints

ss black is the best to get a deep true gloss black. ive read this on many hodrod and muscle car site

        steps that they use

        paint
        50/50 paint mixed with clear
        full clear

others just paint then wait about a week to cure then wet sand then add the clear
