  • Death of an MT300 - Power Cord Issue

Well my MT300 decided to give out on me in the midst of polishing my personal car. I had previously used it on 3 cars successfully.

Turns out it's the power cord. I hope this is not a common issue. Putting it out there just in case someone else is having the same issue.

I will be in contact with Meguiar's customer service to find out if this is covered under warranty.

Time to bust out old reliable, the PC7424XP to finish the job.

      Sorry to hear that.

There was a thread a couple of weeks ago where someone said they heard it was a common issue. I said they must be getting confused with the G110v2.

      Maybe it is fairly common?

We can go out for a drive without her makeup and she looks fine. If I want to take the black one out, it is three or four hours in the "bathroom" to get ready.

Unfortunately I am not the only one. I have seen another person post their youtube video of their MT300 doing the same thing. I did hear back From Mr. Stoops saying this is covered under warranty.

Good thing I had my porter cable as a back up to finish the job.

Re: Death of an MT300 - Power Cord Issue

This is definitely not a common issue with the MT300. The is nothing common between this tool and the G110v2, certainly not the cord or even the way the cord is attached inside the tool. They aren't built in the same factory and none of the raw materials suppliers are carried over from the G110v2. The MT300 is indeed a "clean sheet of paper" design, done in conjunction with a major American tool manufacturer.

Obviously nobody mass producing anything gets 100% perfect output and we are sorry to see this happening to your tool, Michael. Call the guys tomorrow AM and they'll get you sorted out. Plus, since this is posted in the Customer Service Hotline section it generates an automatic email to Brian Hann, manager of the Customer Care Center, so he'll see it, too.

Re: Death of an MT300 - Power Cord Issue

Mike as I was packing this up to have it shipped out for warranty work in the original box, my electrical engineering background kicked in.

I see that there is a lot of strain on the cord as there is not a lot of space between the box and the cord. This causes strain on the cord. See how it forces the cord in the upward position. Cables don't like to be strained tightly like this. It's no coincidence that mine only works with the cord in the upward position. I highly recommend that the packaging be revisited as this could be a potential cause.

"This thing has 250,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder!" - Rockhound

At least Meguiar's has great customer service. I like my old standby of the G100 and a Griots.

No power cords likes that much of a bend. I cringe when I see people wind up their cords for their cell phones etc. Your connection may just be loose.

I think if Meguiar's is using the same company as the G110 then they need to question some manufacturing problems. Meguiar's specifications, but built at another company that is trying to save money too. The G110 had their problems.

On the other hand, we only hear about the ones that break, I know Joe from Superior Shine has a G110 and not one problem.

Our jail facility is falling apart and we have discovered that the company used inferior parts causing our lockdown door to pop open on their own. Makes you feel good at 0300 in the morning when a maximum security tank opens.

Do we dare discuss the Big 3 from Detroit and their manufacturing woes over the years? LOL.

Just in case you missed it, we have parted company with the folks who built the G110v2 for us. In fact, we partnered with a major American tool manufacturer to develop this tool here in the US. There is not a single part from the G110v2 used on the MT300. And while the MT300 may indeed be built in China, it's built in a factory that is overseen by our American tool partners. It's more like the way Apple builds all their products in China, but they were engineered here in the States and manufacturing is overseen by Apple. All of that applies to the MT300 (well, except the Apple part, of course!) but even so, when you mass produce anything you're never going to get 100% error free output.

Received it back after the repair. Plugged it in and it turns on. I plan to use it on another car very soon.

Glad it worked out for you.

Here's hoping for countless hours of polishing with it in the future!

Hope it works out. I think I would have been ripping it apart to investigate the issue and end up doing a self-repair :-)

I was about to do that but since it's under warranty it is best to let Meguiar's take care of it. That's what it's for . I had a back up DA so it wasn't the end of the world.

I am satisfied with the quick turnaround and 2 day shipping from the service center and customer service. Was not thrilled that I had to pay to ship it for it to get repaired.

What I did do was place a note in the package to have them not pack it in the original box since it put's the cord at an awkward angle and strain. They sent it in a slightly larger box and it was packaged nicely.

I did see that over on Autogeek there are a few members who have had the same issue as I posted a similar thread there as well. Hopefully this is not a bigger problem.

The thing is, what happens if the machine decides to go after the 1 year warranty? Does the owner have to pay for the repair? This is why many praise Griots Garage and their lifetime warranty and also that they cover all shipping costs.

Good point on the Griots warranty. I only have Harbor Freight DA Polisher so its cheap and I've modified it to suit my needs.

Huge selling point for the GG DA, that is why I have 2 GG DA's and one Megs G110v2....but Megs customer service is still top notch
