DUB Wheel Cleaner / Iron-X

I understand that DUB Wheel Cleaner & Iron-X both have the same basic ingredient to attack iron on your wheels or paint. I used it this weekend to remove some spots from my white paint on my 2015 Toyota 4Runner. It definitely found the iron spots and turned color as it should. I let it dwell for around 5 minutes making sure it didn't dry and then rinsed generously with water.

Just out of curiosity I sprayed the same spots again. Again it turned color in the same spots. I let it dwell for around 5 minutes making sure it didn't dry and then rinsed generously.

Then I did the above steps for a third time and the same thing happened.

If these products are indeed removing the iron shouldn't it eventually stop turning color? The same spots showed up three times in a row. Am I doing something wrong? Do I not understand how this product works.

Perhaps those iron particles are embedded deep in the paint.

I've actually wondered if these iron decontamination products aren't just a gimmick. I'm not saying that they are, but the sceptic in me sometimes wonders.

It's relatively easy to make a product react with iron and change color, but just because it changes color, doesn't mean it's actually removing anything (or anything much anyway).

I'm glad you did this little test and posted, since I've been meaning to try the same thing.

I can attest to ironx working on paint but not DUB wheel cleaner. I had some contaminants that would not come off with a clay bar on my camaro. Hit it with some ironx and it definitely pulled them off. Claying is also easier after using this.

DUB wheel cleaner works great when used on wheels.

How would you describe those contaminants that wouldn't come off with just clay?^
Were they visible? Or just rough on the paint?

Visible. They look like little black specs in white paint. Clay did remove those that were not embedded deep.

As long as they are changing color they are still removing the iron, Once they stop changing color the iron is gone

Everything that we deal with in detailing happens in varying degrees. Bonded contaminants accumulate over time, and the longer you let things go the worse they get. But even the specific iron particles can vary in size and quantity. On the flip side, any cleaner comes in varying degrees of potency as well. Take something like D101 APC, for example: we recommend a couple of different dilution ratios depending on how aggressive of a cleaner you need. Comparing DUB Wheel Cleaner to IronX it's pretty fair to say that IronX has a higher concentration of the iron reacting ingredient... which is also why IronX smells so wonderfully spring fresh (accent on the heavy sarcasm). So, with DUB Wheel Cleaner not being as concentrated/strong/powerful/aggressive as IronX it follows that you may need multiple applications of it to remove all the contaminants present. Just like removal of below surface defects using SwirlX on a foam polishing pad at low speed may require several passes, but the same defects are gone in a single pass using M100 on a microfiber cutting pad. Although both SwirlX and M100 are comprised of an abrasive suspended in a liquid, M100 has more abrasive particles for a given volume, and those abrasives are more aggressive.
