  • Polishing Compound Swirls

I installed a junkyard hood on a '96 Accord. The finish was full of scratches so I wet sanded it with 2000 grit and machine applied Turtle Wax polishing compound with a wool bonnet. The finish looks pretty good but there are polishing compound swirls when looking straight down at the hood. I ordered Ultimate Compound and will machine apply with a foam pad to see if the swirls will clean up a little. Does this sound like a reasonable plan?

I'm going to flip the car so I don't plan on investing a lot of time or money in this project. I'm just curious and interested in your opinions. Thank you.

I would go for Ultimate polish if you are just cleaning up some compounding marks. It should work well for you.

Ultimate compound is not recommended for rotary use. If you are looking for something that is, that would be M105. M205 or ultimate polish (as recommended above) would be a good thing to try before compounding once again.

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate the replies. I will pick up the ultimate polish. I didn't know ultimate compound is not recommended to be machine applied. Glad I asked!

It is ok to use with a dual action polisher.

I don't have a da polisher, just a variable speed polisher. Again, thanks.

Meguiar's M205 Ultra Finishing Polish, M83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish, or M82 Swirl Free Polish are some of our cleaner/polish options , and applied via rotary polisher, on a foam polishing pad, should likely meet your goals/expectations for this particular car you are going to flip. They will work to remove the swirls marks, and produce a great high gloss. We are not all that familiar with the compound you have used, but we would imagine it is likely there are some scratches or sanding marks that have not been fully removed, and will have to be taken out with a compound again, like Meguiar's M105 Ultra Cut or M100 Pro Speed Compound, but again if you are just going to flip the car, and are not looking to bring this surface to a high level, you will likely be satisfied with one of our cleaner polish options.

Nick, which one will produce excellent result: Meg 205, M83 or M82. I guess Meg 205 with either rotary or DA will do. To be honest I'm not sure what is the advantages from M83 or M82 and we have M205 available. Thanks

I used to use M02 Fine - Cut Cleaner to clean up defects like those you mention, on either a wool or burgundy foam pad, followed by M09 Swirl Remover on a yellow polishing pad - when I was using a rotary buffer.
