BTW, not to get to nit-picky, but I'm sure you realize that the buffer and pads I have been using for probably ten years was what was demonstrated to me at a Meguiar's workshop and sold to me by Meguiar's. If I've "technically" been using the wrong backing plate, then Meguiar's "technically" sold me the wrong backing plate.

Thanks again. I appreciate your time.
Just to note, the pad Mike is using in Post #8 is a 6" pad not a 7" pad. He mentions it's a W8006 being used.

Anyway it looks like you've got the correct backing plate for the new pads!

I'm wondering if it's possible that sometime in the past 12 years the 6" pads were replaced with 7" pads. When I purchased the buffer, I'm pretty sure it was the same one (and same pads) that Mike was demonstrating in the workshops I had attended.

It's a moot point now - I'm looking forward to trying the new ones (and happy that my buffer is still working! ).

      Thanks.

A lot has changed in the past 12 years, to be sure!!! Back then we had 8" foam pads for the rotary, and 6" foam pads for the DA. Those were the original Soft Buff DA pads - burgundy for cutting, yellow for polishing and tan for finishing. We then moved to a "universal fit" 7" pad system suitable for both rotary and DA use. These had a recess on the back for easier centering, and a new backing plate was designed to work with them. These were the Soft Buff 2.0 pads - burgundy for cutting, yellow for polishing and black for finishing. The cutting foam was changed from the previous version, and the finishing foam was different not just in color but in construction as well.

A couple of years ago we moved back to dedicated pads for rotary and DA. The current rotary pads are 7" diameter and have a recess on the back like the Soft Buff 2.0 pads did. The foam pads are now very thin design (hence the naming convention of "thin foam disc") and the cutting foam has been changed yet again. It now cuts faster, finishes nicer and runs cooler - both the 7" rotary and smaller DA discs. The yellow foam remains the same as previous iterations. The black foam for both rotary and DA has been changed again, and it is the softest, nicest finishing foam we've ever made. DA discs now come in boht 5" and 6" sizes. We recommend the 5" discs for our new MT300 DA polisher as well as DA tools from Porter Cable, Griot's Garage, Harbor Freight, the Rupes 15 and other tall stroke tools that ship with 5" backing plates (normally these are 15mm stroke tools). The 6" discs were designed for use with pneumatic DA tools that generally use 6" backing plates, for the Rupes 21 and other 21mm tall stroke tools that also use 6" plates, and the Flex 3401.

Of course, in the middle of all that, we introduced our DA Microfiber System as well, which really turned things upside down!!

Whoever devised the yellow foam formula used in the polishing pads Meguiars use should get an excellence award! As much as the other pads change size, height, weight and foam construction, this yellow foam seems to 'keep on keeping on' without change to the foam formulation.

Congratulations yellow foam formulator! Top job!
