Outstanding, just simply an OUTSTANDING article!

Reading this, is it any wonder I've been pretty much a "system" guy for 50+ years?

Thank you very much for doing this Charlie.

Thank you all for the comments! I'm glad to see folks are enjoying the article and getting something out of it.

As I mentioned to Kevin Brown in a conversation on Facebook, I think there are a lot of people who are newer to the industry that have had little (if any) exposure to some of the older technologies that were commonly used in the past, so it was/is my hope that seeing the progression over time would give a better appreciation of just how good we all have it now... and for those of us who have been around a while, a walk down memory lane is always fun.

Excellent description, Charlie. . Amazing information.

I have to say and agree with you to see the next update & mod for Megs MT300 coming soon. Looking forward to see it in SEMA2016 I hope. Also be nice if Megs can introduce new DA 12mm instead of 8mm with all the lessons learned from pervious and existing models.

I was searching for a comparison of the G110V2 and the MT300.

                  Nice article Charles...

This early Wooless Wonder is actually in my antique wax collection.

Here's just a partial selection of my collection on display in my office.

At this year's Detail Fest Barry and Karen Meguiar checked out my collection...

Barry Meguiar visits Mike Phillips and his antique wax collection

As many of you know, I collect antique polishes and waxes from the early days of the car wax market. While here for the 11th Annual Detail Fest, Barry and Karen Meguiar came to visit my office and check out some of the rare and unique Meguiar's products in my collection.

Pictured here is an early 1/2 gallon glass jug of Mirror Bright Machine Light Cleaner. This would be the predecessor for what most of you know as Meguiar's #2 Fine Cut Cleaner. This was given to me by Tom McDonald.

Barry shared the story behind the name change from Mirror Bright to Mirror Glaze. He said back during the start of World War II the government enacted a national price freeze for consumer products. Frank Meguiar Jr., Barry's Grandfather and the founder of Meguiar's, knew he couldn't make a profit on the current line of products without a price increase to keep up with the increase in cost of raw materials for manufacturing.

The price freeze only affected current products so Frank Meguiar Jr. introduced a brand new line, the Mirror Glaze line. The Mirror Glaze line would replace the Mirror Bright line and could be launched as a new line at a new price point. This would ensure the Meguiar's company could remain profitable and thus protect the company moving forward until the war was over and the price freeze was removed.

And just to add to the history behind the evolution of the dual action polisher in the car detailing industry, here's an article I posted to MOL back in 2010 where it shows how the PC actually came from the wood sanding industry.

The Free Floating Spindle Assembly - The Story Behind The Story... by Mike Phillips

And here's another article on the history of the dual action polisher

The history behind polishing paint with a DA Polisher

Everyone knows and talks about electric DA Polishers like the Porter Cable but does anyone know the history behind where these paint polishers came from?

                  Well here you go...

In the below picture is a new, never before used W-6000 6" Dual Action Buffing Pad from the late 90's, these were around back to the 1980's and possibly longer, I don't know it's hard to find anyone alive that remembers that you can talk to.

Note the wording states you can turn any dual action sander into a dual action polisher...

For those that might not know, this is an air powered, DA Sander, commonly used on body shops to sand paint, primer and bondo. ALL body shops have these air powered DUAL ACTION sanders that use a 5/16 spindle to hold a backing plate.

The W-6000 has a 5/16" threaded stud affixed to the plastic backing plate...

                  Here it is attached...

Here it is hooked up to an air line...

And here I am running the DA Sander/Polisher over the trunk lid of a Honda...

Then sometime in the late 1980's or early 1990's someone discovered that the pad Meguiar's sold for air powered DA Sanders would fit and work on a Porter Cable DA Sander.

Note when I typed, fit and work, that's two things, there are lots of electric DA Sanders, but most won't power a foam pad, only a thin sanding disc.

And there you go... Meguiar's, a company already selling and teaching people in the body shop industry how to finish out swirl-free on fresh paint after first using a rotary buffer introduced the same pad to the enthusiast or consumer world using a tool that the average person can plug into an electrical outlet in their garage.

The average person doesn't own an air compressor large enough to power an air powered DA Sander as a polisher around an entire car. See my article below...

Then somewhere along the line Porter Cable included a copy of the Meguiar's W-6000 DA Pad in the box and called their DA Wood Sander a DA Polisher.

And that's the rest of the story....

                    Love the history lesson Mike!

When 'foam' pads came out, I remember the major statements were, "What? You gotta be kidding me!" And those were the 'kind' comments (LOL).

                    Boy were we WRONG!

Charles, great write up. Thanks to you and Mr. Stoops for getting all that together! I've always wanted to know that story.

Mike Phillips, thanks for sharing that info as well as those pics. GREAT collection.

the DA Power System is the first "machine" I purchased. Just over a year ago. I honestly believe it's underrated. It's a great tool that I still use today, although I also have the PC, GG6, and most recently, the MT300.

Just received the MT300 yesterday! I know I already have the other 8mm DAs, but when I briefly held the MT300 in the Megs Advanced Class, the machine just felt so right in my hands. I'm anxious to use it this weekend, and hope that it suits me as well as the DAPS has.

Thank you. The key is not breaking the glass bottles by dropping them or the antique plastic bottles by squeezing them or dropping them because they crack real easy.
