  • Trouble removing scratches/swirl marks

    Hello,

First I want to apologize if i posted this in the wrong area as I am brand new to the forums

I have just started detailing my mustang and seem to be having issues.

    So what I did was;

    1. Wash and rise with Meguiars ultimate wash and wax
    2. Hand dry with Meguiars water magnet microfiber towel
3.bring inside to cool shaded garage, then clay barred car with meguiars clay bar and quik detailer for lube
    4. used ultimate compound on sections with deep scratches.
    5. Polished entire car with ultimate polish
    6. waxed entire car with ultimate liquid wax

now the car looks fantastic, you can so tell the difference. but i still see many scratch marks that i expected the ultimate polish to remove. I dont know if i needed to run the ultimate compound across the entire car? I will if needed.

my concern about this would be since i already polished and waxed the car can i use ultimate compound? i imagine that would take off the wax.

Also when i was using the polish, i used more polish, less polish, no matter what i did some areas left hazed smudges on the car. i just couldnt scrub it off.
once i waxed the car all of the smudges came off but im afraid since i left smudges i didnt polish it correctly.

i used a mixture of microfiber applicator pads and foam applicator pads.

any help and advice would be fantastic.

Are you able to feel the scratches with your finger nail? Are you working by hand or machine?

Thank you for the quick reply

      I do everything by hand.
And I just ran my fingernail across the scratches and I don't feel any bumps

Getting those defects out by hand is going to be really tough. The products you used would work but you will need the assistance of a DA or similar machine probably with some Meguiars red cutting pads or yellow for sure. Yes you will have to start over with the UC which yes will remove the wax but it wasn't ready for wax yet any way.

Going to have to agree. A DA is the way to go.

Sign up for the open garage here. Someone who knows what theyre doing will look at your paint and at the least recommend a compound that will work best with your car.I thought i would be good with UC turns out my scratches and swirls were too deep. Their instructor Nick recommended the correction kit compound worked great

I'd highly recommend a DA Polisher. Paint correction is so tedious without one.

                    Re: Trouble removing scratches/swirl marks

Like others have said, some type of Dual Action Machine is going to make this easier, like our DA Power System Drill Attachment or MT300 Dual Action Polisher.

If you are going to continue to work by hand, we would recommend going back with the Ultimate Compound to try to address these swirls & scratches. Ultimate Polish has the ability to remove mild swirls or fine scratches, but for these in the pictures the Ultimate Compound is going to be needed. Yes the Ultimate Compound will remove the work the polish has done and your wax protection, so it would be recommended that any time the Ultimate Compound is used, to follow with the Ultimate Polish and Ultimate Wax for best results. When using Ultimate Compound or Ultimate Polish by hand it is best to work in small 1 square foot or 2 square foot areas at a time. With either the Ultimate Compound or Ultimate Polish, we would recommend applying with either a foam or microfiber applicator pad, keeping your hand flat, in circular overlapping motions, using light to moderate pressure. The product should break down to a light wet translucent film, this is when it is most easily able to wipe off.
