  • Pictures from Thursday Night Open Garage - May 12th, 2016

We had a great night last night at our Thursday Night Open Garage with a couple of fun projects to work on. Sal's 2015 Volkswagen Golf R has seen one of two canyon runs and a lot of random deep scratches from who knows where. Sal & T heard from an on-line forum there were some generalizations that these paints are hard (resilient to the process of working by hand or machine with a abrasive paint cleaner or compound to remove defects within the clear coat) so we kept that in mind when we got to work.

    Swirls, RIDS, Water spots

The surface was not all that rough to the touch after wiping down but we decided to clay to ensure no contaminants remained.

Below we tried to capture the defects on camera with this Lapiz Blue Metallic paint. The metallic paint hid the defects very well, but you can see in the picture below, this is what we were dealing with on the entire hood of the car.

    Out in the sun..

Another project going on jf3lix's father's Toyota Corolla. These guys didn't need much assistance over here. They started with our DA Microfiber Correction System, and didn't like the haze the aggressive combination produced on this particular paint. They moved down to our DFC5 5 Inch Foam Cutting Disc along with the same D300 DA Microfiber Correction Compound, and still eliminated the defects to their satisfaction, but with no haze.

Back on the Golf R we started with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish on a DFP5 just to see how the paint responded...and nothing! This combination didn't touch any of the defects, indicating the generalization with this paint was true, it was hard.

We moved up to our DMC5 DA Microfiber Cutting Disc along with our D300 DA Microfiber Correction Compound. This combination removed about 80% of the defects, but we were still left with a lot of deep scratches. After chasing scratches with this combination, we decided to step up to our M100 Pro Speed Compound along with our DMC5 DA Microfiber Cutting Disc. This extra jump in aggressiveness with our compound selection proved to be a winning combination to eliminate all defects we were presented with quicker. Time to get the car owner and his buddy T comfortable with our DA Polisher.

And there you have it! We followed the above process with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish on yellow foam, and then an application of our M21 Synthetic Sealant.

We couldn't let the owner roll out with the rest of the car dirty so we explained how our D115 Rinse Free X-Press Wash & Wax can be used as an alternative to washing, and then we proceed to clean all exteriors surfaces of the car.

Thanks to everyone for coming out! Feel free to post any questions or comments in this thread and we will be sure to answer.

Hi, it's T with the Limestone Gray Golf R.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank Meguiar's for hosting this event, and in particular Nicholas for his hard work and expertise. Many thanks also to the other participants who were there and shared their knowledge with a couple of noobs.

Sal and I learned a lot, and we have a plan to paint-correct the rest of his car -- the hood was definitely in the worst shape, so much of hard work is already done. Once we are done we will come back for another Thursday Night Open Garage.

    Cheers!

      Hey Nick,

This is Sal. Wanted to thank you again for helping my poor hood out. This morning when I saw it in the sunlight, it looked GREAT.

I would also like to thank everyone there for giving me tips on what to do and for sharing their experiences. Like T said, we are going to keep at it and work on my car and do the rest of it. Hoping we have the same success that Nick had..

We will definitely be back again. Once again thank you, much appreciated. 👍

Thanks Nick and the other attendees at the TNOG.
I wanted to also thank Bill IMZN4 for sharing time to look under my hood and engine compartment, Bill shared ideas on making improvements in cleaning it up a few more notches.
