White cars need love too! We rolled in this 2009 Audi to work on for our demonstration portion of our Saturday Detailing 101 Class.
After removing the light contaminants from the surface with our Quik Detailer spray, we evaluated for any bonded above surface contaminants by feeling the paint with our hands when it was clean and dry, and our hands were dry. The paint felt very rough! We proceeded to explain how we recommend removing these rough feeling contaminants, with a clay bar.
What is going on here??? Looks like some red paint over-spray. The owner admitted that this probably happened when he painted his brake calipers red.
We literally could not see any sign of red paint over-spray on the car until we used a clay bar on the surface.
After we used a clay bar we evaluated the paint under good lighting to inspect for defects. We found all types as usual, swirls, RIDS (random isolated deep scratches), water spot stains and overall lack of clarity for this non metallic white paint.
We first started applying Ultimate Compound with our MT300 Dual Action Polisher on our DFC5 5 Inch Foam Cutting Disc. This combination removed 90% of the more shallow swirls marks, but did not take care of the deeper scratches. We could have applied a couple more passes & chased the deeper scratches with Ultimate Compound, but we explained that we do have the option here to step it up in aggressiveness, which will make the task of completing the entire car quicker. We tested our DA Microfiber Correction System, a DMC5 5 Inch DA Microfiber Cutting Disc along with our D300 DA Microfiber Correction Compound.

Now we are talking. Defects removed to our satisfaction.
We provided some additional technique recommendations when using a dual action polisher before we let the group get a chance to try. We discussed variables to keep in mind, machine speed, choice of pad, choice of product, pressure, arm speed, size of working area, pad angle & pad rotation.
We then explained the importance of cleaning the DA Microfiber Cutting Disc after each set of section passes! Here we cleaned the microfiber disc by holding a microfiber towel against the face of the pad, running the machine on a low speed. This technique absorbs excess product, fluffs up the fibers, and helps remove paint residue which is stuck in the disc.
Using a pad reconditioning brush to clean our DA Microfiber Cutting Disc.
And compressed air.
Staying with our DA Microfiber Correction System, we followed up with our D301 DA Microfiber Finishing Wax on a DMF5 DA Microfiber Finishing Disc.
All done!
