Pictures from March 23rd, 2017 Thursday Night Open Garage

The first TNOG of 2017 was a rousing success..... even if Nick Winn had to be traveling to do training with a major retail outfit and yours truly had to step to keep things in order!

Up first, a black Dodge Challenger that needed just a bit of fine tuning in the owner's technique. You can see from the center area in the image below that he was getting a bit more haze than he really should have. The left side was how the car presented to us, and the right side is after Ultimate Compound on the burgundy foam cutting disc. Still a tiny bit of haze, but far better than what we started with. This tiny bit of haze is easy to clean up with a secondary polish step, and we did just that before applying Ultimate Wax to finish it all off.

Time to put the MT300 into the owner's hands and give him some time to refine his technique.

How's this for some seriously scratched up door cups?? Ouch!!

A quick hand application of Ultimate Compound and we're getting close! One more shot should do it!!

Up next, a 2007 Lexus that, while still showing a lot of gloss in the paint, also showed a ton of swirls. We could easily remove the swirls with UC on a burgundy foam pad, but the amount of RIDS was kind of shocking! We opted instead to break out the DA Microfiber Correction System and use that. Sure enough, in a single pass the swirls were gone and so were the RIDS!

Of course you were going to ask about this, and of course we did this - claying!

This is what came off half the trunk lid. We've seen worse, but still this needed to be done before we compounded.

A 50/50 shot after just D300 on a microfiber cutting disc.

Discussing proper priming procedure for the DAMF System.

Swirls? We don't seen any swirls!!

Again, time to let the owner get a taste of the process. After all, he's the one who has to finish the job, right??

Nice scratches on this Camry trunk. And they were like this all over the lid!!

    This. Is. Not. Good.

    Before:

After: (after a quick once over with D300 on a microfiber cutting disc, that is!)

Time for the owner to give it a go. Are you sensing a theme here yet???

What do we have here? Why, yes, it's D300 on a microfiber cutting disc putting the shine to this VW R32. What do you suppose is being whispered between those two? "Hey, this is what we did to my car just a few minutes ago!!)

Time for the owner to.... yeah, you know the drill!!!

We couldn't leave the window trim looking so blah and dull, so we applied a bit of Ultimate Black to it. Much better!!!

Nice transformations and team work, as usually at TNOG.

Nick will inspect the work done upon return

    M. Stoops back in the 'Thursday night' saddle!

Some tidy turn arounds there too Mike. Looks like some nice cars in attendance needing the ol' Stoops magic!

My review of the TNOG hosted by Meguiar's....

If anyone is riding the fence about going to these "meetings", do go. What surprised me was that there are regular participants (pro detailers and serious enthusiasts) who show up as well as beginners who are new and want to learn. To get the most out of your time to attend, I suggest come with the desire to learn and don't be afraid to ask questions. They hold these TNOG to teach and we attend to learn.

Get involved, ask questions, get up close during the demos and watch. Ever hear the saying "Tell me I'll forget, show me I'll remember, Involve me, I'll understand"? With our instructor Mike Stoops leading, I can say a lot of us have a better understanding of how to deal with the paint problems we brought before him and the class.

Personally, I got tips from Alan who is one of the regular enthusiasts who show up as well as Mike Stoops. Definitely have a lot to learn still but just the little bit of information and seeing how the paint problems are approached, assessed, and solved gave me a better understanding of the products and tools available and how they work. Baby steps!!!!!!

Will probably attend a few more this summer.
