Good size class for another Meguiar's Garage Saturday Detailing 101 session. It never gets old for us sharing information on car care & our products.
After our classroom portion of the class, we move out into the garage to demonstrate the information & techniques we just covered on the hood of an attendants vehicle. Today is a I believe 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander. We started by using our Ultimate Waterless Wash & Wax, an alternative to traditional washing, to safely remove all loose contaminants on the vehicle.
Next we evaluate the paint for above surface contaminants, by using our hand to physically feel the paint. This car was not too bad, but it was rough, so it needed to be clayed.
We used our Smooth Surface Clay Kit to remove all the present above surface contaminants, essentially contaminants washing doesn't remove.
When a car is in the shade, no light is reflecting off the paint, thus we typically unable to see if any defects are present. Next we use good lighting, in this case, a combination of the 3M Sun Gun, Florescent lights in our garage, & direct sunlight, to inspect for any below surface defects like swirls, scratches, or stains.
See the difference even this cloud coverage can make when trying to evaluate for below surface defects. In the below picture, the defects are slightly hidden.
With the cloud out of the way, we can now get a true idea of the condition of the paint.
We didn't realize when we selected this vehicle, but the customer had applied touch up paint to several chips on the hood. The below picture shows the touch up paint spots..more on that later.
We explained how performing a test spot is recommended. Typically a good start is using Meguiar's Ultimate Polish applied on our DFP5 Soft Buff DA Yellow Polishing Disc. A vehicle with this level of moderate defects, it is fair to say we are going to need Ultimate Compound applied on a DFC5 Soft Buff DA Red Foam Cutting Disc. We used this combination on our MT300 Dual Action Polisher, at 5800 OPM's, moderate pressure, moderate arm speed, 4 section passes in each 2 ft square area.
It looks like we forgot to get a after compound picture, but this combination provided 100% defect removal, and the paint looked like it had been polished & waxed. This is the technology of Meguiar's compounds these days. Older style compounds can leave the paint scoured & hazed. With Meguiar's Super Micro Abrasive Technology (SMAT), most often times the finish looks virtually swirl free.
Now time for the class attendants to try our MT300 DA Polisher.

A quick application of Ultimate Polish applied with our DFP5 Soft Buff DA Yellow Foam Polishing Pad, 4800 OPM's, light to moderate pressure, moderate arm speed, 4 section passes in each 2 ft square area.
We then applied a coat of our Ultimate Liquid Wax, and then for demonstration purposes applied Meguiar's new Ultimate Fast Finish. (Typically if you were using UFF in this manner, you would want to apply it a full 12 - 24 hours apart from your coat of wax to allow time for the wax to fully cure.)
We pull the vehicle outside for some direct sunlight shots! Defect free, high gloss & protected shine.
