help with speed setting

so i went to harbor freight and picked up the chicago electric dual action random orbit variable speed polisher the speed settings are numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6 it says 2000-6400 OPM. can someone help me I'm not sure what speed is needed for each application as in compounding..? polishing..? waxing..? buffing..? thank you guys for all your help

I use between 5 and 6 for polishing and 2-3 when I use my Nanoskin Autoscruber Pad.

Keep in mind that in addition to machine speed, arm speed, pressure, & size of working area are big variables in your overall results. The slower you move your arm & the more pressure you put down when using a compound or cleaner/polish, the more "cut" or "correction" you are going to obtain. Pad rotation is also important whether you are cutting or finishing. For a standard size stroke machine like our MT300, PC7424 or the harbor freight unit you have, we would suggest using our 5 Inch Soft Buff DA Foam Discs. 6 Inch are OK, but using a 5 inch pad in our opinion will allow to get the best cut & finishing ability out of your machine. i am getting a new backing plate and pads I'm getting 5 inch and 3 inch backing plates along with new pads

I have had good results on black paint with the HF DA using 3 to spread the polish around then up to a 5 for rubbing in. I can’t not get swirl marks out on polishing but the wax afterwards seems to remove most swirls. After wax I follow up with detail spray. That removes all swirls. I hope with some experience I can remove swirl marks at the polish stage.

It totally depends...

I just finish polished my gf's truck with a 1st gen Porter Cable 7424 on speed 1! I know a lot of people can't get that thing to spin unless It's on speed 5 or 6, but once you get some experience, and start experimenting you can get a feel of how capable the Meguiar's Super Micro Abrasive Technology actually is.

On Monday I had a van. It was spur of the moment, and all they wanted was a cleaner wax. The front bumper was trashed so I went over it with Ultimate Compound and green pad on speed 3 - 3.5.... It took two or three passes, and came out great.

I think sometimes we over shoot the target using high speeds, high pressure, etc. We end up exhausting the lubricants, and overloading our pads with liquids.... Back off the speed, pressure, and amount of product and see what happens. You might be surprised.

This won't work as well with the traditional orange and white pads though. Use the pads I have in my profile pic, or the Meguiar's discs.

I agree!

Sometimes, going low and slow will give ya results that one didn't think possible. Guess you could call it a 'surgeons touch' or doctors oath-"do no harm."
