Pictures from Meguiar's August 24th, 2017 Thursday Night Open Garage Classes
The theme for tonight was non metallic black cars apparently! And of course as many of you know, jet black paint is the most challenging to achieve a perfectly clear swirl free finish. First up was this special corvette. The owner had already completed a compound step on most of the car using our DA Microfiber Cutting Disc along with M100 Pro Speed Compound. None of the finish polishing work had been completed. He came down to TNOG just to check it out, but I offered to have him pull in the garage, and help him come up with a process for his next step.
I couldn't even begin to tell you all that was done to this car. Completely different motor than original, a 427 block. It pretty much sounded like a NASCAR when it pulled up if you can imagine.
We started with M205 Ultra Finishing Polish applied with our MT300 DA Polisher and our Soft Buff DA Foam Polishing Disc. 4800 OPM's, 3 section passes in a 2 ft square area, moderate pressure, moderate - fast arm speed. This combination refined the paint to our satisfaction.
Difficult to capture in a picture, but below is what we started with ( not too bad at all considering the aggressive combination which was used as a first step)
And after M205 Ultra Finishing Polish on a Soft Buff DA Foam Polishing Disc with our MT300.
We worked to finish the hood along with the owner, and wrapped it up. This project was fairly straight forward since the paint was responding so well.
Little side note, check out this interesting clear coat failure. It looks like a rotary polisher had been used improperly at first, but this is just the way the paint was failing, since the owner confirmed a rotary had never been used on the car? The front of the hood is where the owner attempted to improved the appearance, and while he did, there is not fixing this without a re-spray.
I can always count on one of our regulars to bring in some headlights to repair. Perfectly fine by me since we document the process each time so others can learn.
These lights were off of a 2002 Ford Explorer. Sometimes it is just easier to take the headlight lens assembly out of the vehicle for repair!
A variety of sanding discs where used by 3 Inch pneumatic machine to knock down the yellow & cloudy appearance. Meguiar's M100 Pro Speed Compound followed by PlastX, followed by our Keep Clear Headlight Coating was chosen for the finishing steps.
Next up was this non metallic black Lexus IS. The paint was very soft, and the owner could not get anything to finish out DA Haze free. We completely primed our Soft Buff DA Foam Finishing Disc with Meguiar's M205 Ultra Finishing Polish. Each & every pore of the pad was saturated with product. Before applying to the paint, we cleaned the primed disc with a microfiber towel, to soak up a majority of the polish. Two small pea size drops were added. The goal was to have a primed pad, but very minimal amount of product.
Two section passes at 4800 OPMs, up down, side to side, with the above process was all that was needed to remove the DA Haze, and finish polish the paint to a high gloss, meeting the owners satisfaction.
This was a great learning lesson & reminder that with Meguiar's Super Micro Abrasive Technology (SMAT) more passes when finish polishing is typcially not better.
Lastly we worked on this 2005 Lexus ES, which looked like it had been completely neglected it's whole life. This was the owner's mothers vehicle, and he as well was looking for help finish polishing the paint. He had already used our Ultimate Compound with a Soft Buff DA Foam Cutting Disc on the hood of the vehicle, but was having trouble getting the paint to finish haze free. The owner was also concerned since he stated he picked up was looked like black paint on his pad! This ended up just being just a tinted clear coat paint system.
Ultimate Polish Pre-Waxing Glaze was used, and all it took was some minor adjustments to technique.
After we explained to the owner that we had a new Cleaner Wax introduced, he was definitely open to not having to complete a multi step process for the rest of the car. We ended up using Meguiar's D166 Ultra Polishing Wax for the rest of the vehicle. Below is an example of the tinted clear coat.
