What a fun class we had this weekend! Thank you to the attendant's PASSION for making this Detailing 101 Class extra special for everyone!
After some detailed discussion in Meguiar's Training Center we moved out into the garage to demonstrate some of the techniques learned in class.
Our demonstration vehicle was this 2005 Toyota 4Runner. When I saw the vehicle parked in the morning, I knew we were in for a fun demonstration car. (Stayed tuned for the EPIC before & after picture).
Yikes! What happened to the gloss?! Swirls, Scratches, Stains, Oxidation.

We started explaining some of the differences in the common power tools used for polishing paint. Here we show how the rotary, regardless of how flat your pad is, is going to continue to force spin at speed. This is one of the contributing variables to why this tool is more difficult to get a swirl free finish and also why it has risk for actual damage. In the right hands, a rotary tool can do wonders. Rotary Polishers just take much more practice than dual action polishers to become proficient.
We start by wiping down the vehicle with our Quik Detailer Mist & Wipe. After feeling the paint to inspect for above surface contaminants, it indeed felt rough, so we used our Smooth Surface Clay Kit to clay the hood and remove the contaminants.
Even though we were only working on the hood, we couldn't help but at least wipe down the rest of the vehicle for the owner.

We explained that based on the condition of this paint, we felt comfortable moving straight to Ultimate Compound applied with our Soft Buff DA Foam Cutting Disc.
MT300 Dual Action Polisher, Soft Buff DA Foam Cutting Disc, Ultimate Compound, 5800 OPMs, 4 section passes, moderate pressure, moderate arm speed.
We were on to something! Stay tuned for the EPIC before and after picture at the bottom of the thread. In this picture, when we held light at a certain angle, you could literally see where this bird dropping etching had caused the clear coat layer of paint to fail. This was not coming out.
The attendants proceeded to get familiar with our MT300.
Again, we couldn't help ourselves to touch up some of the rest of the vehicle. Here an attendant uses our Ultimate Black Trim Sponges on some of the exterior black plastic. The light gray area in the middle has not been treated, while the surrounding dark gray is now restored & protected.
We showed a couple different alternatives to "cleaning your pad on the fly." Here we take a cotton terry cloth towel, and carefully press it against the pad, turning the power on a slow speed simultaneously.
Compressed air is definitely the most effective for pad cleaning on the fly.

After Ultimate Compound, Ultimate Polish, Ultimate Liquid Wax, we topped with Ultimate Fast Finish.
