Pictures from Meguiar's October 7th, 2017 Detailing 101 Class
For our last Detailing 101 Class of the year we worked on this 2017 Toyota Tacoma non metallic black pickup truck. Yes, model year 2017.
The truck has plenty of gloss being brand new, but there is a big difference between gloss with swirls & scratches & gloss with no defects! Scroll down for our before pictures out in the direct sunlight.
We started by using our Ultimate Waterless Wash & Wax applied with our Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels.
When using a waterless wash product like our Ultimate, it's recommended to apply the product liberally, and use a gentle touch when wiping. You can either lift up the leading edge of the towel for each pass or flip & fold the towel often exposing it to a clean side to work with. Flip to the dry side of your towel for the final wipe.
Next we evaluated for above surface contaminants by physically feeling the paint when it was clean & dry, and indeed it did not feel completely smooth. We used our Smooth Surface Clay Kit to ensure all above surface contaminants were safely removed.
And next we evaluate for below surface defects, inspecting for any swirls, scratches, stains, etc.
We decided to pull the truck out into the sun to really get a good idea of the condition. See below for our BEFORE pictures.
When most people think of machines being used on paint, they immediately think DANGER or DAMAGE. There are some machines which users should definitely be cautious of, there are other machines which have extremely low risk, like random orbital dual action polishers.
We explain the differences in the commonly used tools for working on paint. With rotary polishers, these units are a single action, clockwise spinning & forced rotation. Regardless of how flat the user keeps the pad, the polisher is going to keep force spinning. This is what contributes to many users experiencing buffer trails, holograms, or even potential permanent paint damage like burning the paint.
With a dual action polisher, the machine is spinning & oscillating. In general this is a much less invasive action for paint polishing. Secondly, Meguiar's MT300 Dual Action Polisher Machine is a random orbital dual action polisher, which means if the pad is not flat, the machine is going to slow down or stall all together, and not continue to force spin.
We start with Meguiar's Ultimate Compound applied with our DFP5 Soft Buff DA Foam Polishing Disc. Compound does not always need to be used with a cutting pad. We used this combination for many years on our older G110v2 Dual Action Polisher with our 7 " W8207 Soft Buff Foam Polishing Pad with great defect removal ability. Since this truck mainly just had heavy swirls, which typically are shallow & not too difficult to remove, we first tested this combination.
Ultimate Compound applied with our DFP5 Soft Buff DA Foam Polishing Disc at 5000 OPM's and 4 section passes removed the swirls like we anticipated, but it did not remove the deep RIDS (Random Isolated Deeper Scratches) which were widespread throughout the section we were working on.
We then stepped up our aggressiveness to Ultimate Compound applied with our DFC5 5" Soft Buff DA Foam Cutting Disc. This combination removed all the present defects to our satisfaction, and left very minimal DA Haze, impressive for a compound applied on cutting pad, for a jet black painted vehicle.
We then switched to our Ultimate Polish Pre-Waxing Glaze to further refine the paint, add gloss, & remove the mild DA Haze. We tested a variety of combinations, using yellow foam, black foam, 4 passes, 2 passes, etc. Ultimate Polish greatly improved the appearance. We decided to test a different product, Ultimate Polish's big brother, Mirror Glaze M205 Ultra Finishing Polish. DFP5 Soft Buff Yellow Foam Polishing Disc, 4800 OPM's 2 quick sections passes, (up down, side to side) and BOOM, we had found our perfect combination. While our standard "Ultimate Trio" works excellent about 90% of the time, (which is quite the feat in itself) sometimes certain paints call for different liquids, like in this case, our M205 Ultra Finishing Polish,
Next we get the MT300 in the hands of the car owner and our class attendants.
The hood of this Toyota Tacoma has dramatic curves & contours so we used our 4" DA Power System Compounding Pad on our 3" DBP3 DA Backing Plate.
All that was needed now was to wipe off our Ultimate Liquid Wax and pull the truck into the sun to reveal our final results.
