  • Polish, Glaze or Cleaner before Waxing?

    Hey guys,

Have just purchased a 1998 Nissan Silvia S14 Q's SE, beautiful little car in quite amazing condition, the paint is excellent.

Am about to wash the car for the first time, and want to use a wax-free wash, let me know what is recommended, I was thinking NXT?

My real question however is this: The car is Silver in color, it has no major defects whatsoever, no real swirls or scratches either.
What I'm after is a deep glossy shine, so, would you guys recommend a glaze, polish or cleaner prior to waxing? Or a combination? I have detailed before right through from Ultimate Compound, but this paint is in far to nicer condition to cut. Perhaps something with super fine abrasives?
I'm very keen to hear from you guys, as there is a plethora of products to use! Cheers!

Sounds to me like your Nissan would be a good candidate for Ultimate Polish. It's tough to get an outstanding gloss with silver, but the combination of fine abrasives and polishing oils in UP should help.

In the Consumer Lines, just the Wash and Wax has wax... Nxt, Gold Class, etc are all wax free.

Yeah, Ult Polish then Ult Wax is probably what you would want to look at. And Ult. Quick Wax for after future washes...

Ah ok so Gold Class IS wax free? I thought the "conditioners" were perhaps referring to a wax type additive.. What would you recommend from the two Murr? Also, is there a need for a glaze/cleaner stage prior or post polishing? I would love to use Ultimate Wax but $20 per 100ml here in NZ it is slightly out of range cost wise.. Is there another Meguiar's Wax you guys recommend? I really like liquid/thin paste type waxes. Cheers again, much appreciated team!

It might be a little oily or something, but no wax.

I would go Gold Class... I think the Gold Class leaves a nicer look behind... So for future washes, you'll probably like the Gold Class better anyway.

Also, is there a need for a glaze/cleaner stage prior or post polishing?
The Ult. Polish is a mild cleaner with lots of polishing oils, so that should cover you there.

How is the cost for the Ult. Quick Wax?

You could do something like Gold Class Wax (looks nice, not quite as durable) as a base coat, then use Ult. Quick Wax after future washes, if you wash often. The UQW is quite durable as well.

#21 Synthetic Sealant 2.0 would probably be closest to the Ult. Wax.. but not sure how easy the Pro line is to find there...

Re: Polish, Glaze or Cleaner before Waxing?

Cheers Murr, this is hugely appreciated. I already have a decent collection of Meguiars products, including Ultimate Quik Wax.. My options for wax are: Gold Class Carnauba Plus, NXT Polymer Sealant and Deep Crystal Carnauba.. Id also like to find some NXT 2.0 paste.. But anywho, what one of three would you reccomend? I have never used a Polymer Sealant and am a super deep gloss, even onnthe Silver.. Will NXT Polymer Sealant achieve this? Or am I better off with another product?
              Cheers again

Re: Polish, Glaze or Cleaner before Waxing?

I think people would say the Gold Class will be a bit deeper, and the Nxt a bit glossier.

It probably wont matter in the long run, esp if you wash often and use the UQW after each wash, you'll end up somewhere in the middle...

Oh, and look for a clay kit if you can... claying helps a lot too...

Will do Murr, plan is to wash, clay, polish and then wax the car. Not sure if I will get the time this weekend now, will certainly have the time to wash however, so am planning on a wash with GC followed by a coat of Ultimate Quick Wax, next weekend I will wash again, clay, polish and then wax using the products you have recommended! Will eventually get around to doing the interior too, has the classic 90s Japanese black vinyl and black plastics.. I haven't actually had a search as of yet but anything recommended here would be great also, along with something for external black rubber trim? Have never actually used a Meguairs interior or trim product before..

Re: Polish, Glaze or Cleaner before Waxing?

The Quick Interior Detailer is good for dusting and regular use, and leaves a matte finish.

Then I use the Supreme Shine once or twice a year just to darken the interior plastic back up. Its a bit glossy, but i have mostly texture, so not bad. I think the one with the purlply label is more matte finish.

You are getting some great information from our community here! Happy to see! I wanted to add, it is impressive what a cleaner/polish like Ultimate Polish can do to a light colored paint when applied with a yellow polishing pad on a dual action polisher like our MT300. Really can increase the gloss and "pop" look.

Re: Polish, Glaze or Cleaner before Waxing?

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but how often can UP be used to help get that extra pop on new car? Also, does UP take bits of the clearcoat each time it's used?

I have a 2017 Chevy Malibu LT with dark blue velvet metallic paint, which I believe is a hard paint. Which would give better results, UP or #7 glaze.

Still trying to learn Meguiar's products.

                        Thanks

Within reason, you probably can't use UP often enough to hurt your finish, especially on the hard paint of your Malibu.
As one who uses a lot of M07 on single-stage paint restorations, I'll tell you it's a product not worth the effort required on a new clearcoat finish. I've done it just as a test on one of my newer cars and it gives an insane "wet look" on a dark color, but the effort required is substantial, since it has to be done by hand and there's no longevity. I've done it on the night before a judged show with my El Camino on a surface already polished and waxed and it looks great for a couple days or the first washing. It's just faster and easier to give it a rub with M26 or Gold Class. If you're looking to get the most out of an already good dark finish, I'd recommend UP, Mirror Bright Polishing Wax, or even D301 Finishing wax.
