Meguiar's Keep Clear Headlight Coating is a MISLEADING product.

I'm yet to find what materials this stuff is made of. They tell you is a coating that is supposed to "protect" the headlights. If this thing is a protective, why do we have to cover the paint so much? If this product was actually a coating that protects from sun damage, there would be no problem in getting it on paint, because it would be like any other sealant (Ultimate liquid wax) and paint coating out there. If anything, it would protect the paint just as supposedly it protects headlights.

In reality, this product is a coating that EATS AWAY the clear coat of the headlights gradually. This is how it keeps the headlights clear for 1 year. You should NEVER put this on new headlights, it won't protect them, it will do more damage than good. You should only use this on old headlights. It will slowly eat away the material and clear coat, thus preventing the yellowing and haze from showing. This is why you are told to cover your paint. You don't want to get it on the paint, it will eat away the cleat coat.

It will keep your headlights clear for 1 year, but not so much because is actually protecting them from the sun and thus preventing the yellowing and hazing, but is gradually removing clear coat, so you never really see the haze on the headlights because of it. It is basically like sanding headlights once a year, but just like sanding, you can only do it so much before you have no material on the plastic and it cracks.

Meguiar's Keep Clear Headlight Coating is a polymer based coating, and can be applied to new headlights or headlights that have been restored. For new headlights, the use of our Keep Clear Headlight Coating will protect the factory coating on the headlight, helping to prevent it from oxidizing. (this is why headlights turn yellow & oxidized, because the factory coating on the exterior of the headlight assembly wears down from elements of the environment like UV Rays) On restored headlights, since little or none of the original protective coating is left behind after most restoration processes , Keep Clear Headlight Coating does jus that, provide a protective coating so they do not revert back to being yellowed & oxidized. We recommend taping off & protecting the paint & other surfaces surrounding the headlight assembly, because Keep Clear Headlight Coating can leave shiny streaks & an uneven appearance if it gets on a surface other than the headlight...

Apologies for reviving a slightly older thread, but this is very much related to the problem I'm experiencing, but the problem is that information I'm being given by Dale (a sales and marketing executive), contradicts what you are saying as a product expert.

I used the Keep Clear coating on both my headlight units, one of which was brand new, and one which was sanded down using the enclosed pads and compound. Both headlight units came out blotchy.

Dale hasn't really been able to give me an explanation for this other than telling me to sand down both headlight units and re-apply the compound, but sanding down a new headlight unit for this product is worrying to me.


On Feb 21st 2019 he said:

"The coating definitely needs the surface to be prepped beforehand to work. This means that even on new headlights the surface requires prepping using the compound and pads provided." which directly contradicts Meguiar's own website and you.


On Feb 28th I pointed him out to this thread and Meguiar's website showing that this coating is sold on it's own and even advertised for new headlight unit protection.


After 3 WEEKS I had zero response, after which he re-iterated that the item is not sold seperately and all headlight units must be sanded down for this product.

On the 14th April I again pointed him to this thread and to Meguiar's website, but he said that it's only sold seperately and advertised as a standalone headlight protectorant in the USA, not the UK. At this point I asked for my enquiry to be passed to his manager but no reponse so far....

Is the product different between the UK and USA? Why are you (Nick) saying one thing and Dale saying another? I seem to be being ignored by Dale now and since it's just a 'contact us' form, I have no way of contacting someone else instead.

Sorry to hear about the trouble. If the appearance resulted in a "splotchy" or uneven look after using our Keep Clear Headlight Coating, the coating can be removed by using isopropyl alcohol aka "rubbing alcohol". We would suggest dispensing the isopropyl alcohol directly onto a clean, quality microfiber towel, and began rubbing on the face of the headlight. It typically takes a few attempts & an abundance of product, but it works.
