  • Questions on D300 and D302 Usage

I plan to use D300 followed up with D302, topped off with Sonax Polymer Net Shield on my new to me Certified Pre Owned 2015 Jaguar F-Type 340hp Convertible:

The instructions say the D300 and D302 can either be applied by hand or by a DA Random Orbital Polisher at 4800 OPM and 3800 OPM, respectively. I do not have a DA Random Orbital Polisher and it is not currently in the budget to get one. Plus, I've never used one and do not want to learn on my Jag. I do have a 10" Random Orbital Buffer rated at 3200 OPM. I know it has less OPM but can I get decent results using this machine with microfiber bonnets? Any risk of damaging the paint? There are very faint swirl marks present that I would like to try to remove prior to applying the Sonax.

You won't damage the paint by hand, or with the 10" Orbital.

You might want to start with a test spot of the D302. That might be strong enough to clear up the paint before sealant application.

Thanks for the reply! I'll test the D302 first and see what the results are.

Most if not all Meguiar's products can be applied by hand or machine. The tool you have is often referred to as a wax spreader. It won't do much in terms of correction. I would actually invest in a dual action polisher. The harbor freight one is affordable. All one would need is the proper backing plate and pads. Or head over to the Autopia forum and look for the open box deals which ranges for various polishers.

Now onto the products you have. D300 is a great compound. Works great on a DA with a microfiber cutting pad. Good cut, little to no dust and a nice finish especially on harder paints. By hand you may not get the correction results to remove the deep stuff. It is a lot of work by hand so keep that in mind. you may not even need the compound.

D302 polish contains no abrasives in it. The microfiber pad is what does the cutting/correcting and the polish is sort of acting like a lubricating agent between the pad and paint.

If you need some correcting ability you may want to consider picking up M205 or ultimate polish as both will clean the paint while removing light defects by hand.

Goof reference video on working by hand with ultimate compound and polish.

I would agree with The Guz's response. If you want to work by hand for now, products like our Ultimate Compound & Ultimate Polish would be a better choice. We tend to like to use soft foam applicator pads when working by hand, like our W0004 Soft Foam Applicator.
