  • HELP! Can I add water to quik detailer when using a clay bar?

    Hey team,

Am about to wash, dry, and clay bar my 1998 Nissan Silvia here in New Zealand, the range of products we get here is good but nothing like you guys have in the U.S.A!
I purchase the "Quik Clay Kit" as its a great price and 100 grams of clay is enough on a smaller Coupe such as the Silvia, however it only comes with 1 bottle of quik detailer which I CAN NOT purchase seperately.. I understand some people use water when claying, but my question is, can I dilute the quik detailer in say 1:1 ratio with water in a seperate spray bottle? (I want to use the lubricant for added security and max effect)
1 bottle isn't enough to do a complete vehicle generously, please advise!
    Thanks so much once again!

Hey. What is the component composition of the quik detailer. I'm sure Meguiars has heard from customers with this situation. Curt

I clay while the car is wet after washing... seems fine and can use less detailer.

I'm sure a little watering down wouldnt hurt.

Other wise, you could look at soapy water, or clay while washing...

We do not recommend diluting our A33 Quick Detailer Mist & Wipe, since it is a Ready to Use product. We do have our D15501 Last Touch Spray Detailer which can be diluted. M34 Final Inspection can also be used as a clay bar lubricant.

Thankyou for the information Nick, much appreciated. I don't believe I can buy either of those 2 products off the shelf here in NZ, so I will simply do the car in 2 stages.
            Thanks again for the info!

You are more than welcome & one other thought, you do not have to constantly flood the surface with Quik Detailer while using the clay bar. Just enough for the clay bar to glide across the surface is enough. There is not really any significant danger is not having enough Quik Detailer on the surface for the clay lubricant, if there is not enough, it just won't work right & glide. You should be able to do a full car with one 16 oz bottle.

Meguiar's New Zealand's web page (http://www.meguiars.co.nz) shows that both M34 and D15501 are available over there.

There's a dealer locator on their site, too.

I always dilute my detailer 50:50 when claying be it Meguiar's brand or some other. I tried just car soap and water, but did not like the "feel" of it.

Re: HELP! Can I add water to quik detailer when using a clay bar?

                    Thanks team,

Have just completed claying the entire vehicle, with amazing results.
I have just run out of QD with the roof, rear bar and windows left to do, am thinking about purchasing an entire new kit as the clay is well used now also, I went over every square inch and removed all spots, it takes ALOT of time but the results are amazing and well worth it, it looks incredible and I havent yet applied any polish or wax.
I ended up diluting a little of the detailer towards the end, it was ok, it did require a little more effort and a little more detailer to obtain the same "glide" and "feel" however.
I have used this product once before (Vehicle was re-sprayed, unless your willing to fork out 5-10K here in NZ, the re-sprays are never as good as the original factory job, we have some amazing painters, but its not cheap) but the paint on my newly acquired 98 Nissan Silvia is quite incredible for its age, and being silver it was really obvious just how effective the clay bar was.

Thanks again for all of your help, I had a few friends show up whilst I was in the middle of claying and they were blown away, they're 100% convinced on Meguairs only now! haha.

How big car have you? :P I used half of the bottle claying my car (Golf Mk4 estate). However i kinda have the same issue as you. Not easy to get hold of the Quik detailer. So i used Mothers instant detailer instead (which you can get hold of more easy here). Sure you can get it at Meguiars Sweden, but shipping costs $15 as lowest, so you kinda pay more for shipping then the product itself.

I really dont see why they charge shipping like that. Most of the Meguiars products you can buy in every hardware store

My Nissan Silvia is only a small 2 door coupe, my problem is that I got over every square inch haha! I can source the QD here but just like you, its not that straight forward.. I still have a tiny bit of claying to do and am looking for an alternative as we speak, Im seriously considering using a little GC wash in a spray bottle with water, Id love to grab some QD but I only have the roof and rear bar to go.. :/

If you can, grab some QD. Whats left you can have as a "emergency kitt" for bird poo, fingerprints etc It always amuse me watching a Meguiars video, when they quickly use a new MF towel, or some product since their source of it is endless. Me myself and i, have to spend tons of money for the same products and treat them as gold. Would be really funny for a American to come to Sweden to see the small range and the prices here

And yea, you can use Schampoo and water as clay lube, but it won't be the same as our precious QD

Sounds like using too much probably... But like was mentioned, I just clay while the car is wet to use less...
